Our bathroom smells, and I think it’s just coming up from the waste tank (def not the toilet) as I guess there are no traps in the MH plumbing. Apart from emptying more frequently, does anyone have tips for prevention? Is there something we could add to the waste, for example?
Thanks.

You may have to sterilise your waste tank - lots of ideas around the MHF site of how to do that, from several large bottles of very cheap cola (to rapidly change the pH balance) to Zoflora.

Please be careful with whatever you use as some may be too aggressive for the delicate motorhome waste system and some is poisonous to aquatic life and persistent.

Also leave the plugs in when plumbing not in use :)

On my Bailey 740 there are traps in the outlets from the shower tray and the shower basin. Have a look uner the van near to where the shower tray is located. If there aren't any keep plugsin the drain holes.

Even with traps, it can still stink when you drive. The turbulent air pressure from driving a brick shaped object at 60mph, combined with braking and cornering to slosh stuff about, can displace quite a lot of water and let funky air escape.

The solution is to periodically clean the tank. A couple of times per year, we put Puriclean in the fresh tank, let it sit, then run it through the taps and down the plug holes into the waste and let it sit there overnight. Two-for-the-price-of-one.

Best advice I got on getting new, leave the trap open !!!!! while away last year in this weather type, closed as respect to site, when I left opened over drain, the whole of Cornwall could smell us after that, bought a jerry can to slide under now, never closed again, took ages to clear the smell.

We use cheap dishwasher tablets. Break them up and then dissolve in water and pour it down the sinks and shower traps. Then use the waste tank as normal.

Having said that in hot weather the best way is to empty the waste tank more rather than waiting until it full.

Sterilise your tank with a Toilet Duck type products.
Zoflora smells the sweetest but it's 4x the price of normal stuff.
Always empty your tank ASAP and leave it open as much as possible

Thanks for all these helpful replies - seems we’ve been a bit negligent in the hygiene department!

Thanks. With the Puriclean, having emptied, presumably you have to completely drain the fresh tank before refilling?

We have bleach tablets and break one up into a jug and fill with water and put some down each plug hole for journey home. On site in hot weather, we keep a collapsible bucket under the open drain tap and empty from there. Just little things can make a big difference.

Yes. We just empty all the clean through the taps into the grey tank.

I think Puriclean recommends a rinse through too? We have a separate water container for drinking water, so we don't tend to bother.

Use plugs and cover the plug with a damp cloth whilst your driving.
It's difficult to fit waste traps in retrospect as the system is not really geared up for traps, saves the manufactures a few bob.

Our vans have had traps but they are so small and shallow the get emptied after a few miles of driving.

No traps on mine and I’ve never had it smell. We leave the tap open all the time we can. So only closed when on-site.
