We will be passing close to Munich in late August and my son recommended we go into Munich for the day. Can anyone recommend somewhere to stop for 2 nights? Be good to have a personal recommendation as we've never been to Germany and it will all be new to us. Thanks

As far as I know Thalkirchen is the only campsite in Munich. We always stay there and there are a couple of good beergardens close by. The bus stops just outside the campsite and then the Uban into the city centre takes about 20 minutes. There is a nice bar on the campsite overlooking the river and they do surfboarding on the waterfall, which is good to watch. As Munich is one of the most expensive cities in Europe the camping is not cheap, so be warned.

Not at this location below, but when we stayed at the Sports Stadion in Erding, we walked to the station, and got the train into Munich. (y) Easy.

Have a look at.........

Good luck,

Do not forget the Hofbrauhaus, or the Englisher garten beergarden.

We stayed at the Thalkirchen campsite last year - as @Snowbird says, there's not much of an alternative. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with the place considering it was £25+ per night. Pitches are an ok size but they're segregated by metal barriers and you have to pay extra for hot water if you use their washing up facilities or showers. The MH service point was fine, though if you wanted to fill with water there you had to pay extra (make sure you use one of the free taps dotted around amongst the pitches instead).

On the good side its an easy walk/bus ride to the ubahn station, and it looks like an easy cycle into town (we didn't try this due to the weather - as you can see from the picture above!).
Maybe its better in summer when everything is open along the river?

We loved Munich (despite the snow and rain) so we're planning on a night or two again this year though we'll probably stay at the stellplatz at the Allianz arena this time. It looks like its slightly further from the centre, but its only €15 per night inc electricity (y)

The only problem with the Hofbräuhaus and their biergarten in the Englischengarten is that they (naturally) only sell HB beer....which gives me a REALLY bad head....even after only a couple of pints :( Still worth a visit for the ambience though.

Augustiner beer is MUCH nicer (y) https://wirtshaus-am-bavariapark.com/ & https://augustiner-wirtschaft.de/

The food market is worth a visit too: https://www.muenchen.de/rathaus/Stadtverwaltung/Kommunalreferat/markthallen/viktualienmarkt.html
