I'm in Leeds but I'm happy to travel to use them purely due to reputation.
Their Fiat technician will be back tomorrow and will answer my query about reset adjustment but meanwhile I've asked for a booking.
Here is a typical aftermarket non Fiat Clutch kit so you get the idea of parts cost and presumably FIAT are dearer
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUAL-MASS...835263?hash=item35e99fdebf:g:LeEAAOSwNphWXABA

£418
This Kit Comes with the Following Items:

LUK Clutch Drive Plate
LUK Clutch Cover
LUK Release Bearing/Concentric Central Slave Cylinder

I'm sure I've read somewhere there's a garage in Perpignan that does clutches. :getmecoat:

Sorry Andy couldn't resist:laughing:

Andy for what it's worth I am told the reset is needed only when a new clutch is replaced, biting point etc. I should imagine the fitting of the clutch would be the same as a Manual so not rocket science, it's just the reset proceedure can only be done with the dealer tool. Fiat Examiner I think it's called. So I think it's a wise choice to go to CamperUK as they are Fiat Professional.

Andy,

Camper UK do have a lot of experience with Comfortmatic gearboxes, I was there at the time they were wrestling with problems Sonesta had with her box.

I live about 35 miles from them but always use them in preference to local Fiat garages.

Mike

Yes I remember that too, that 810 Elegance went back to Burstner and was nothing to do with a gearbox fault, it was a short to ground in the wiring at the back of the offside headlight

An estimate yes and it is lower than my own lowest estimate so happy with that.
I'll give details at the end of the experience.

I'm sure they will do a good job.

A comfortmatic clutch should give normal service from 100,000 miles upwards. This is according to Walton Summit Trucks who service all the 3ltr Comfort matic ambulances that are on the road 24/7. All the fleet are Comfort matic.

That is indeed the theory, but in my case applying the reset to my not-new clutch improved the biting point (quicker to pick up drive) and cured the slipping symptoms. It seems that the reset 'caught up' the automatic gradual adjustments that had not been happening.

Andy's is now the fourth case of this type I've heard about, including mine.

Correct about the eventual conclusion, but I saw them swapping gearboxes on a couple of occasions to try and rectify the fault. They gave Sonesta a new vehicle - excellent customer service or what - and I believe the root cause of the problem was only discovered when the vehicle was taken back to the factory.

I need someone specifically equipped for comfortmatic and expect £1200 to £1500
You have just put me right off buying a comfortmatc now, It will have to be a Merc 7G box.
These auto change boxes might just drive like an uncaring clutch slipper, and you have no control over how it does it.

These type of boxes are used in a lot of trucks. They wouldn't do that is they were expensive to maintain. The problems only come I think with slow speed manoeuvring, especially up hills.

I have the G7 box in my car, love it. But must admit I was shying away from the Comfortmatic box for years, thought it was like the Salespeed type that are fitted to the Alfa's.

Now Iv'e driven one, it's sooo much easier and wished Id'e bought one years ago.

I'm on my second Comfortmatic and the drive is so relaxing, it's a brilliant gearbox. I mentioned earlier about the 3ltr Comfortmatic Ambulances that are on the road 24/7 and the high mileages that they do. There is bound to be the odd failure occasionally when you think of the thousands that are on the road. The Fiat 3ltr engine is also in a class of it's own with a timing chain instead of a rubber belt. A real prancing horse.

the company I work for has twenty two Fiat mini buses running 3 litre engine with comfortmatic gearboxes, so far about six of them have had replacement clutches, at approx. 20 to 30k. we also have had loads of problems with clutch slave cylinder failure.
Three weeks ago five of the fleet were off the road, not proving reliable at all.

That certainly isn't the feedback I'm getting from Walton Summit Trucks regarding the Fiat 3ltr Comfortmatic ambulances. Who services your mini buses?

I think I'd be asking who decided they needed replacing. In the light of my experience they might just have needed adjusting or resetting.

I am feeling quite blessed that I've achieved over 47k. It was slipping slightly when I bought it with 31k
BTW the camperUK estimate does not entertain a flywheel. That being over £400 plus VAT

Hi Andy, try Calder Valley Motorhomes near Dewsbury. They do a lot with Fiats and he told me that Fiat commercials send him a lot of work to do on their behalf. Did my MOT, service & hab last year. Maybe worth getting a quote to compare against Camper UK.

Hi Top

After a further conversation with Walton Summit Trucks a few minutes ago regarding Fiat 3ltr Comfortmatic clutches I have been assured that the clutches last an absolute minimum of 80,000 miles to well over 100,000 on the fleet of ambulances that they are responsible for servicing considering the constant changes of drivers between shifts. They are in use 24/7. In a previous post I mentioned 100,000 miles which was mentioned to me by another service manager. This garage has a very good reputation and many motorhome owners use them in this area. Could it be that the low mileage failures that have been mentioned on here are down to driver abuse. My previous motorhome had done 46,000 trouble free miles and the comfortmatic clutch had been totally faultless. Motorhomes need to be used on a regular basis to keep everything in good working order it doesn't do them any good to be parked up in the drive for long periods. Would I have another one, you bet I would.
