I'm trying to establish some sensible essentials for the motorhome. And before anyone gets pedantic, yes nothing is really essential, including the motorhome, you can go camping without one! '\

When we know approximately what we need to carry, only then can we decide if a payload is useless. I've just thrown a few things into a spreadsheet and added a weight per item. I've done two lists, one is communal essentials. There are things that the van needs, no matter how many people are on board. And then a personal list that we can easily multiply by the number of people who are going to be travelling in the van

In the communal lists I've added an extra battery and solar as essential and these are heavy But when you consider some makers are shipping vans with a 75ah battery I consider them essential!. I know there are extremes, some don't need a battery at all as they are always on hookup, others fit 4 extra batteries. So I think one extra battery is reasonable and should be on the essentials, maybe you do to, maybe not.

So what have I missed that needs adding, and what should I remove. Cheers

Maybe have another for say family travel that would include basic family stuff e.g. x 4 with bikes, bike rack if used, a paddle board, extra kids food, iPads, TV's, towels, clothes, toys/games e.t.c. Taking kids or grandkids can really up your weight hence me upgrading the van.

THANKS for taking the time to do this, I have just bought some scales on a deal on amazon today, I went for the Dr style mechanical as it has most weight allowance £22 in todays ideal (y)

Amazon product ASIN B0001HYH5Q

For winter driving skiing tow chains add a lot of weight

You have basic tool kit and small tool kit. Is there a difference and wouldn’t the small be part of a basic?? The hook up cable weight is missing as well. ??

Spare wheel, jack & torque wrench about 40kg.
Battery a bit light normally 28 - 30kg.
A high percentage of us carry e-bikes @ 25kg each.
Clothes & shoes are way under, I carry at least 5 pairs of shoes and 2 pairs of walking boots, 'er indoors the same. ½ doz shirts & ½ T shirts, 4 pairs of shorts, 2 pairs walking trousers, 2 pairs of jeans & loads more.
We carry 2 sets of bedding, 2 sets of towels each + beach towels.
Tool kits seems a bit light,
BBQ a bit heavy & not essential.
Chairs a bit heavy.
Our table is 2.5kg but new ones we have looked at, most are over 4 kg.

Just my personal thoughts Jim but if you’re going into that level of detail what about any of the following? :
Base vehicle handbook
Motorhome handbook
Fire extinguisher
Fire blanket
Screenwash
1Ltr of engine oil
Steering lock or wheel clamp
The ubiquitous watering can
Waterproofs/walking boots
Mirror guards

Plus a couple of queries on your list:
Do you really need a toaster if you have a grill in the cooker?
Only one pair of jeans/trousers?

  • Thanks

Cleaning materials? Food?
Just read again, and you’ve got this! Doh!

Yes, the Hookup cable. It's not in my final calculation yet as are none of the things that are supposedly part of MIRO. Thing is while the NCC mention a hookup lead is within MIRO not many makers do.

Cooking utensils
Chopping board

Some gas is supposed to be part of MIRO,
Any idea of what the allowance is? I have twin 11kg gas low system and having that in my new van, but both full to say 80% plus weight of equipment must be quite a few kg

This should be made the 'Weightwatchers Thread' :giggle:

Not sure what is included on new supplied MH...

Fuel for engine.
Gas, gasx2?
Gas for BBQ if no external port.
Brush/small Vac.
Ladder.
Water.
Water in tank.

I think the Alde heating system holds 10ltr plus expansion tank, I guess this would be included as you can't be expected to empty it each time you move

EU guideline is 1 x 11kg Aluminium bottle which is what the German manufacturers go by.

Is the fist aid kit the knuckledusters. We dont take bikes but at least 14 sets of shreddies. 4 beers or did you mean 4 slabs.

Clothes dryer?
Awning tie down kit?
Tyre inflater?

Tyre inflator comes included with vehicle if you didn’t get a spare.?

My new van doesn’t come with a spare wheel, is that the way to go so you can get more spirits in?

I bought a spare for ours wouldn’t travel without as at least worst comes to worst you can change it yourself and carry on till you can get it fixed.??
