I‘m contemplating cancelling my current magazine subscriptions and moving to an online platform.

I‘ve been directed to Readly (https://gb.readly.com/products/magazines) that seems to offer access to a wide range of magazines for £9.99/month.

Does anyone use Readly or any other similar App etc and have any feedback on the pros and cons of these?

Ian

Maybe I can comment on my experience. A couple of years ago I tried going over to e-magazines, MMM and Practical Motorhome. At the time there was a free reader which I installed on a tablet and laptop. It was easy enough to use but I found I couldn't get used to the actual act of reading off the tablet/laptop; I much preferred a paper magazine, probably because of the way I browse, so I cancelled them (and that's another story!) and just carried on with a standard subscription. Which I'm now thinking of cancelling as of late they're so repetitive and feature stuff I'm not really interested in anymore.

When the MotorhomeFun Magazine came out I thought it would be the same, and of course you can download it to a laptop. But having it on my smartphone seemed to be quite different and the option to read it in a text view makes a world of difference.

A smartphone is a relatively new adventure for me so I don't know if this would apply to other mags.

We have used Pocket Mags many times in the past and its good that you can read all of the earlier mags purchased on our iPads / laptops when away from home. We only purchase single issues that contain things that we are interested in. Prices are less than the paper version sold in the shops. Link here https://pocketmags.com/login

The mags can be enlarged when viewed on a big screen like a PC which could be helpful for those who find small print sometimes hard to read.

Jim posted this a few years ago. They had MCN then. But at the turn of the year no MCN so I cancelled.

Right now I'm trying to buy BikesUnlimited which gives all the Bauer bike mags for a one off payment of £67 for a year. I've loaded the app but all it produces is a white screen.

I use readly - it is good value. Can download stuff and read it when there is no net; can share with I think 5 others. Loads of magazined but not MMM I think

I also use Readly and find it good value for a huge range of mags, but not MMM. You have a choice of recent issues often the last 24.! Like anything else good value if you really use it.

never heard of readly before and it does look good can you read it on more than one platform ie the pc at home and android pad when away or even phone?

Readly often do deals where you can try it for 99p for a month and although you set up a direct debit it’s easy to cancel. I did one of their 3 month deals and then cancelled. I keep getting deal offers so stop and start. It’s pretty good. I use it on my iPad. I’m a bit too tight to pay the full subscription ! You can share it with 5 or 6 family members though.

Tried Readily (well son's trial account) for various non-motorhome publications but we both gave up after the three month trial. Reasons a bit like TerryL.

As a young teenager with raging hormones, I used to take a certain well known “Men’s” magazine to the toilet with me......

I’ve finally realised I am getting old as I now take “MMM”..... :giggle::giggle:

You can sign in on 5 devices. We've subscribed for a few years but will probably cancel if it's going up to 9.99 a month. I think it's 7.99 at the moment.

I use readly and the range of content is good with UK and overseas magazines.

also worth checking your local library and most offer magazines, ebooks and audiobooks online, ours in East Sussex has an app called Libby and has other magazines not available on readly.

I occasionally buy CARAVAN magazine, but always hide it inside a MEN ONLY so that I dont get embarrassed leaving the shop ?

Hubby bought me the Readly subscription for my birthday one year and I continued with it for 3 more. Good if you like a wide variety of magazines and I must of downloaded hundreds if not thousands - particularly enjoyed been able to try magazines I would not have actually purchased - some magazines are sooo expensive.

Why did I stop the subscription then? Hubby bought me a kindle and a subscription and for a set monthly figure I can load free books down to my hearts content

I love my husband (don’t even mind he did it just to keep me quiet?)

I’ve had a Readly subscription for a couple of years now. Was disappointing when MCN left the platform (interestingly, they’ve just started their own digital subscription), but there is still enough content to make it worth the money, just. What it has made me realise is just how much content is duplicated & recycled/shared between mags in the same publishing stable.

Yes, I know what you mean. I, like a lot of men (I think), do some of my reading in the smallest room of the house ? and I‘m not sure I’d get used to having to traipse the iPad there too.

Yes, this might be the direction I take. Readly, or Pocketmags, offers the opportunity for the Mrs to read stuff too but I suspect that she’d be even less likely to make the transition to screen reading than me.

Hmm, Those are two of the publications that I regularly read so undermines my case for signing up with them.

MCN and Ride (and other bike related publications) are available on the bikes unlimited link that hilldweller posted earlier.

Now there's the crunch !

Kids delight at squinting at a tiny screen. Dare I say "tiny", as in no depth is their life style. Well that's the impression from my limited looks on TwatterFace.

Personally I much prefer a full MCN to 10" of one especially with having to pinch/zoom to see fine detail. Originally I went to tablet to read MCN on holiday in the MH.

I read many books on the tablet via Kindle, a book is a similar size to a 10" tablet so the same reading experience there and a massive saving in bulk when on the road. This applies even more so with next year's touring by car.

What you’ll soon realise is just how much content is shared by mags in the same publishing house, and also how much journalism is just rehashed press releases. It’s a tough time to be in print media right now.
