Have downsized to a PVC. The gas locker is accessed through the rear doors. We carry two e bikes on a rack attached to a towbar. This would make access to the gas locker difficult for inspection to prove the gas is of at a port. Am I over thinking or have others encountered this problem? Naturally the gas will be switched off.

We have this problem if our bike rack is on the towbar but the tunnel staff have checked the hob to see if it will ignite.

I’ve fitted one of these in the end of my gas locker, bought from EBay.

we had an underslung tank on our last van and only ever turned of the isolators inside the van

Our back doors open with the bikes on so they can still inspect.

They can't open the back doors with the bikes on.
Correct. If someone at the port insisted on checking if the bottles where turned off I would have to take both bikes of the rack in order to open the rear doors to gain access to the gas locker.

I guess 70% to 80% of the times we've passed thru ET they have requested to see the gas is turned off, the other times they trust us to have it turned off when we say it is. I'd suggest if you're using ET you find a way to validate to them that the gas is turned off when asked. They've always asked or checked each time we've crossed with them.

But you are meant to turn the gas bottles off when driving, how will you do that?

Me? I wouldn't bother, but there again according to some, I am a maverick and will walk down the van to get drinks from the fridge and spend a penny whilst underway!

Not the issue.

Suggestions how to verify it at the port without taking the bikes off is what I am looking for.

You can't! if they ask to see the bottles turned off, you have to show them, or you will be refused permission to travel. Not everyone is stopped but if your picked your picked.

But as you have to turn the gas off everytime you drive you'll probably be quite experienced at taking the bikes off by then :D2

If they do insist then also do it in the queue & refuse to pull to one side.:)

Have the same problem when M?C on back but as said they usually turn gas hob on to see --what I have done in case "jobsworth "turns up is to fit a lid above gas locker (which is under mattress ) that hinges /locks.

Problem solved. Had forgotten the bike rack hinged back.
