I am about to tackle the Pull down bed area cleansing stress in our new to us Rapido 9048. I got the curtain thing taken down to wash and we are getting a new mattress. I now want to dust and clean all the surfaces on the actual pull down area under the slats. Can anyone tell me how the actual slats come out? I had a quick look and didn't see an obvious way to remove them.

Anyone done this, is there a knack?

Have the slats got plastic caps on the ends that hold them in place to the bed frame ?
Press fitted ?
If so ,and on mine with a pair of long nose pliers carefully squeeze together the plastic split lug under and gently prise up .
Yours of course could differ .

Just had a look and ours is different. The slats are in plastic blocks of three and four, every other one is loose and the other one is fixed still. Can't see any way to get them out and there is a lot of dust under there:eek: that has just got to go.

I have to say an A class is a bit of a learning curve coming from a coach built, in a good way mostly, but not this sodding bed!

My 9048 is the same. I cannot get the slats out for risk of breaking them. I use the vacuume cleaner hose attachment to first suck up dust. Then use a microfibre feather duster (eBay) as it’s east to get in between the slats and that picks up remaining dust. I have also sometimes used a large damp microfibre duster and just poked it through the gaps. It’s not a quick or easy job but it can be done.

When you get the new mattress buy two of those thin camping type foam mats and lay them over the slats under the mattress affix with a cable tie on. Wash corner around a slat, it too tight to allow for movement. They improve support and also stop the underside of the mates getting dirty from dust thrown up from the cab area.

When you wash the curtain only use low temperature otherwise the elastic in the pleats will go sloppy as I know to my cost. We had to unpick ours and make it into a straight curtain as it was so loose. I was quoted nearly £500 For a new curtain from Rapido dealer.

Good luck.

Cheers for that Ian, I had a feeling I would have to go that rout with the hoover etc, It'd be too easy otherwise wouldn't it. Also the tips with the mattress, we would have screwed that up too.
I'm ordering two mattress covers while I'm at it so as to have a spare down the road that isn't knackered. I do worry about mould forming up there due to body moisture being trapped when it is closed up after a trip. Especially on the bottom of the mattress, so I'm going to install a small computer type fan to blow across the gap under the slats and prop the mattress up off them.

WOW: I thought I was "good" because I give the slats a quick once-over with a vac every year and wash the mattress cover before "the season" commences. So far I don't seem to have contracted any nasty diseases.

I haven’t had any problems with mould and we leave the bed made up with quilt all the time. We do use a mattress cover. Just one more thing. While you have the curtain off check the security of all the nuts/bolts on the pull down mechanism. We had a bolt fall off when we were driving along, it was the one on the front left facing you when the bed is pulled down. There was no indication it was loose before it dropped off so it’s worth a check. Luckily we found the nut and I replaced it. I check tightness every few months now.

Good for you Gordon, my apparently over the top approach is due to a grandson who will be sleeping up there who has a range of allergies that can do him serious harm. As a survivor of bladder cancer at age five hopefully cured by proton beam therapy in the states, Chemo and ongoing monitoring by Great Ormand Street, he is ten now.
I obviously have to be more or less paranoid where his health is concerned . A second hand van was always a difficult choice for us and I've spent days sterilising the thing. This van has sat for about eight months and there are mould spots on the underside of the mattress and the head boarding above the bed. The rest of the van is mint and spotless so I reasoned that there must be a benefit in additional airing of the bed area.
I should have explained that I suppose.

Cheers again Ian.

Sorry to hear about your grandson: hopefully you will be able to create some good memories together.

Our youngest daughter had a serious peanut allergy and no-one really appreciated the lengths that we had to go to in order to keep her safe, so I do understand your virtual paranoia. Apologies if my ignorance caused you any upset.
