I know a lot of you won’t care, but why are pubs closing so early. It used to be 11 but now they seem to close at 9
They all complain that they don’t make any money, and always have said that but if they don’t stay open longer they cannot take the money.
We have always been the later time drinkers and don’t want to go out early.
We were in the never turn back at canister last night and had a nice meal but when we and another couple said that we would be back at 9 ish he said they would be closed, what a way to run or not a business. Moan over

I suppose they know if they'll be busy after 9pm by recent history.
No point staying open, paying staff wages, if they only get one or two punters in.
Like you, I'm a 'later' drinker.. I would rather go out at 11pm until closing at 4am than sit in a pub all evening.
There few, if any, pubs here that close much before midnight.
My watering hole is on local 'pubwatch' scheme with CCTV 2way radio and seldom hear anywhere signing out before midnight.

Modern man has to be home and in bed by 10.30 at the latest
his therapist said so
Me 9pm to midnight drinker

Wheatsheaf pub on the Wolverhampton rd finished cooking at 16.30 and shut at 7.30 on Sunday when we were there.

Not seen a 9pm in a pub for a very long time.

It’s not very many years ago that pubs were wanting to stay open for longer. They were quite vocal about not wanting to close early. Maybe drinking habits have changed.

Our local is now only open 5-9 four days a week and only serving burgers or pizzas. all pubs around us have big signs outside saying staff needed urgently

It's just as bad round here. Everywhere used to open 7 days a week until 23:00 (maybe 22:30 on Sunday) or even later. Now, most places totally closed on a Monday, and 21:00 midweek. Often with no idea in advance. Hopeless for us, as we generally can't get out until 21:30.

Not worth staying open for possibly one or two customers nursing a four quid pint...
Hi.
Yes and it still having to be heated with no customers as winter comes. They are between a rock and a hard place.
Not the time to be a publican, thats why they are nearly all closing, sad times in the trade.Make a wish this Christmas........
Tea Bag

Then what’s the point of opening at 11am just in case someone comes in. Tesco don’t shut early if no ones in
Because during normal working hours, other tasks can be completed, such as ordering.
Very profitable coffees can be sold (better yield than beer)... kitchen prep done for lunches, dealing with enquiries etc etc...
Tesco doesn't shut early because its part of a national conglomerate.
I doubt pubs owned by a national chain will shut early either.

Walked to our local just after 10pm a couple of weeks ago, closed!

I used to have the lease on a couple of pubs including this one and always stayed open until at least last orders. How can you expect customers late on if they never know when you might be closed.

Extended opening/licensing hours were a nightmare for independent landlords.
12-3 then 6-11 could be covered by a single (split) shift, now extra hours have to be covered by extra staffing with no commensurate increase in income.
Customers only have so much to spend.

:o Must be a regional thing.
In West Berks 11pm is usually OK.
'Spoons are open even later - I can have a pint or 2 after a gig in Reading's :drunk:

How many customers come out a 10pm (other than perhaps city centre)?
How much would you have spent in the last hour?
Where had you been earlier in the evening?
Had you got there at 9pm, perhaps the landlord wouldn't have closed early

Spoons is a national chain
City/Town centre is usually ok
Rural locations usually dead after any early evening trade from the after work customers. Unless it does food and even then that's usually done by 9pm

Plenty come out after a night out for dinner etc wanting to have a couple closer to home at the end of the night.

We would have spent maybe £30 but a few couples doing the same would soon add up.

To be fair if the landlady knew we were coming she wouldn’t have closed early.

My local 100 yards away always welcomed 4-6 of us for the last 20+ years after 9.30, 3 pints each 4+ at weekends but a while ago she decided to shut early when she wanted. Lots of money lost from us and others and pub has gone to pot. I’ve bought a blade machine it’s always open and I’m saving a fortune

Presumably an economic/lifestyle decision.
Did you ask why?

Too right.
Take most of their money lunchtime trade... why shouldn't they have Sunday evening 'off'
Why shouldn’t everyone have Sunday off. After all they are public houses.

At least Wetherspoons got it right. And it would be nice if the pubs told you their new opening hours

Yes she’s always been a friend but she just can’t be bothered, takes bookings for food and then when people arrive won’t cook

At the end of the day, it's their business, presumably they're making proper economic/lifestyle choices.

Perhaps just had enough... comes to us all.
Being a publican is a tough tough life.
Trouble is, in the current climate, it's not easy to sell the business , especially if it's your home as well.

Their business now has to pay before the dray drops and is always running out as they don’t have a spare barrel, good business sense.
