I was reading on a tread about the weight of a van so had a look at my V5 max is 3500kg.
But on the V5 the tax classification is private light good.
Is that right I would have thought it should be laden goods vehicle due to the weight.
As the chassis is a commercial vehicle.

PLG and PHGV are just taxation classifications , not really relevant to use .

Yes it is correct. Private light goods vehicles are up to 3500kg. Private heavy goods vehicles are over 3500kg.

Mine is the same, I think up to 3,5T is PLG, anything over is LGV, and from 7,5T is HGV.
I may be wrong, and someone more knowledgeable may correct me.

Thanks for the replies.
My work van is LGV and it's under 3500kg
I got stoped many years ago for doing 75mph on the A55
When asked what speed I was doing I said over 70mph he thanked me for my honesty and reduced the speed on the ticket to 68mph so I only got a fine not points.
He showed me some weights thing on the back of a book saying it not PLG.
At the time I had a merc van that can't though a car dealership as it was quite tricked up.
It was taxed PLG not LGV as he thought by the reg plate so I got off with it 😀
It it the same on the Moho speed wise.

Can of worms time
Motorhomes are unique, I think, in that speed limits are dependent on the unladen weight, which is almost impossible to ascertain. The limits change from the metric equivalent of 3 tons, 3000 kilo something from memory.

Thank god for that I thought I was special 😩

So the speed of a Moho is the same as a LGV i.e. a van ten off the red circled road sighs.

PLG is up to 3.5t PHG is over 3.5t. Most motorhomes are privately owned hence the private bit then depending on weight either light goods up to 3.5t or heavy goods over 3.5t.
Just thought of something, how are rental motorhomes taxed as if there are a fleet of them they’re not private?

Yes they are.
As already said, PLG & PHGV are nothing more than road tax (VED) classifications ascertained on weight.
PHGV also means it can't be used to carry goods for payment even if belongs to a haulier.

PLG is private AND light goods class. It's an old tax class used for cars and light goods vehicles registered before 2001. It only continues in use for newer motorhomes due to the anomaly that allowed them to be registered without an emissions rating because of the multi-stage build process, and the lack of a current tax class that catered for that anomaly.

Its more than confusing it's giving me a head ache.
So given it's no racing car best to keep the speed the same as a workhorse van.
If it's was taxed on the 11-02 how much will it cost to tax?
It was all in with the deal so I don't know.

The relevant weight for speed limits is 3050kg unladen. An odd weight, but there you have it

What is included in the unladen weight?
Or maybe what is not included in the unladen weight?

Clearly not the driver?
perhaps no gas bottles or habitation water?
fuel?
dealers add on?
bigger engine?

Unladen weight.....
Driver (75kg allowance)
½ tank of fuel
Some say water and gas, others not... I say not as its not an essential part in running the vehicle.

No nothing, No fuel, no water, no gas, no passenger, no driver.

We'll have to differ pappajohn (y)
In terms of motorhomes, I don't think anyone on here has experience of being checked or even knows someone who has been checked re this.

And therein lies the problem, in the days when commercial vehicle road tax,C&U regulations and driving licences were based on ULW in imperial units there were defined conditions, maybe still in existence.

The problem for motorhomes is that ULW is difficult to define, as opposed to Mass in Running Order which has no legal meaning.

It is a complete mystery to me why this one piece of anachronistic legislation is still in use when everything else is based on Max Gross Weight or whatever they have decided to call it this week!

Thanks all
I thought the tax was the same as a car on the value making it Just shy five hundred as it's over four grand.

At the weekend I filled it up with diesel and notice it's not got an ad blue tank.
Not that I will miss having another in the fleet needing it 😫

Is yours a new vehicle?
I do believe the rules changed for new vehicles last year but as I do not have, and am very unlikely to have, a new vehicle I have not taken much notice.

If you want to find out what the tax is then go onto the gov website to check whether it is taxed, I think there is an option to find the cost but you need details from the V5

Yes Feb this year

That's why I was surprised it did not need adblue

I think you may find that you are in for a nasty surprise next year. Rules were changed at the beginning of this year to charge VED for motorhomes based upon emissions, the same as cars. This increased the amount of VED on motorhomes. There was such an outcry that in March the government changed the rules back to what they were for this year, but they didn't backdate that concession to motorhomes sold in the meantime.

Check your V5C to see if there are any exhaust emissions recorded under section V of the vehicle details (bottom of 2nd page). If there are emission figures recorded you could well be paying more VED than motorhomes registered last year and from March onward this year.

Peter Is this the bit you mean in the pics.
We got the wife a new car last year and I thought the tax was on the value that's nearly 500 a year.
For the first five years.
And I thought it was the same for the Moho so if it cheaper I've had a result 😀
