Hi there,

Been thinking about MIFI for when I get my new motrohme in a few months.
I assume most of the MIFI setups run off 12v.
Would you have this powered 24/7 or have it seperatly switched?

For example, leaving it on while driving so the wife can connect to WIFI etc?

Cheers,

Steve

My MiFi runs off 5V usb, and has a battery for when not plugged-in….

(Huawei 5577)

If you go down the Router route (sorry!;)) you will need to run that off 12V, so a small usb-powered MiFi is probably the way to go. If you leave it plugged-in all the time, just be aware that the internal battery can sometimes break down and expand……possible fire risk. Another plus point for the MiFi is that it can also be run from a small power bank such as those used to charge mobile ‘phones.(y)

I connected our router to the 12v Hab electrics, this way whenever we have 12v Hab on we have Wifi.

Cheers
Red.

Best set up is fixed router using 12v supply (e,g, Teltonika) with external antenna. I also have battery powered wifi cameras (Bllnk) connected full time inside the van as additional security measure. This set up was suggested by dealer and works for me.

One alternative would be to use the ‘Hotspot’ function on your mobile ‘phone.
We do the same with iPads and iPhones. Connections are just as good.

Connections may be as good but the signal won’t be as if they are powering an antenna

My netgear m2 mifi runs off battery or usb at 5 volts, it will also work on usb if you take the battery out, so you don’t damage the battery.
It can also pull in a signal where our phones can’t at double the speed.

Our router is only on when we want it on, mostly mornings, if we are on EHU it stays on all day and mostly when travelling if I want internet I use my data on my phone.

I replaced our status aerial with a roof mounted MiFi aerial and used the then redundant power supply to the old amplifier. Plugged straight into the mounting box that came with the MiFi aerial set.

My Huawei Mifi 5577c came supplied with a 12v power supply that adapts the power to the Mifi supply and external aerial connections. I bought it from motorhome Wi-Fi £190 ish. The unit is unlocked and we have toured Europe and it never failed to get a signal, we also used whilst on the move.
we have now upgraded to a router with roof mounted aerial.

Will or can the Netgear connect to dual antennas when in the moho?

Ours is powered via 12v switched so the internal battery is charged when switched on. Its an Hauwei 5577 with booster from MiFi.

The M2 has 2 antenna ports, I purchased an antenna for it that made no difference what so ever, it was actually worse, so I sent it back.
I just put it on the dash or in the roof vent when in the van

I use a buck converter with a USB output that turns off when the battery is charged to power my 5577.
Sorry I can't find a link at the moment, came from ebay.

Which antenna was it (that was no good)? I don't really want to spend over £100 for an antenna that doesn't really improve the signal that much (as it's a pretty good signal already I've found)

I have the b535 router supplied by 3 as part of a home broadband package deal £16 a month unlimited data. Powered via 12v using a buck/boost converter that provides exactly 12v from 9v to 30v input, so very smooth. Powered all day by solar and battery overnight. Gives me plenty of data to work online and stream tv to firestick

Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0001

This is the thing, price has gone up a bit.

This setup is perfect for us.

<Broken link removed>

12V supply to dock but 5v micro USB to E5577. The benefits for us is that it's always on, the signal strength is about 20% better when connected to aerial but you can take it out and about with you when walking/cycling and still get a good enough signal. This means only 1 Unlimited data SIM is taking the strain so the mobile phone SIMs are just occasional 1p mobile affairs.
We even use it in the house via a wifi repeater so no landline required.

Ours runs from the 12v. It's on when the 12v is on. Because we have a compressor fridge, 12v on whenever we are using the van. So we can connect when on the move. There is an on/off switch on the router. If off, it runs on the internal battery. Can take the router off its back plate & use separately, away from the van, (never have done) and it can also be charged via a usb connection e.g. in the house.
Ours was installed by the supplier when we bought the van.
