Hi Funsters. Never done Portugal in 20 years of travelling Europe in MOHO. Planning trip in summer, any advice on ferry or drive? Best deals? Any gems not to miss?

I came across a place called Tomar by chance but what a find. The last stronghold of the Knights Templar. They had a big church etc high up which is now a visitor centre. Every May a Templar festival was held in the town and we happened to arrive for it, fantastic experience. We camped at the city centre municipal, typical site but walking access to everything, lovely people with big hearts 😊

Forget the Algarve, the central and northern areas are best. So many great and often novel things to see. I just googled "10 things to see in Portugal", or something like, and you'll get a list of gems. Beautiful country and lovely people. Enjoy

I agree As above. Braga, Barcelos, Coimbra, Guimares, Porto, and Lisbon all great. So many great sea villages as well. Nazare for the surfing Mecca. Invest in search for sites app (£6) So many great places to visit in Portugal.

Just got back last night from a three week trip to central Portugal. Took the car this time but dropped into friends near Coimbra. Had a five day trip by train to LISBON. Trains are so cheap. 17 Euro from Pombal to Lisbon. Found restaurants far cheaper than the Algarve. Came back via northern Spain the Galicia region, now that's another place you should put on your to visit list then back via Santander. Yes visit Portugal and stay away from the South well worth it.

There are lots of lovely places in the Algarve as well but the height of summer isn’t necessarily the best time to see it for obvious reasons. Further north I concur Tomar is lovely and the old municipal site that is now free is great. Foz do Arelho is great in the summer as being on a lagoon by the sea it often has a breeze, a lovely outlook and all the restaurants etc you need and a

gorgeous beach for a few euros a night. It will be busy but time your time and day of arrival you’ll get in the main site and can work your way to the front over a couple of days. At least that’s what we did. There won’t be many other brits though and the spaces are small so you need to get on with your neighbours 😝 We love it there.

We are at Porto now and want to move up along the Duro Valley. Does anyone have any good suggestions for stopovers on that route please. Paid for or free stops, we are not fussed. Thanks in advance.

Hey Guys Thank you for all the suggestions. Can’t wait to get out there! Just the dilemma of boat or drive!

Follow Portugal’s Route 66, I believe it’s on the N2 north to south.

It’s not for everyone but we’ve always had friendly neighbours from Portugal, Spain, France etc. and the location for €3 a night was worth it. It’s gone up a bit now though I believe.

Peso da Regua. Good camperstop for 3€ per night with water, waste and EHU sa well as overlooking the river. Town is nice with some good restaurants.

Catch a train to go further up the valley with fabulous views of the river and the Port vineyards. They also do boat trips as well.

Weather has been far from great. We scrubbed The Douro yesterday and took one hop to Albufeira. Stayed at an Easy Camp vineyard. €26 for the night, no facilities but 3x bottles of wine and some biscuits in a welcome pack. Tonight we are on a freebie parking just up from the port at Albufeira no facilities again but very clean and quiet.
