I have read and reread posts regarding reaching the age of 70 and applying to retain my C1.
Somewhere I read that D4Drivers weren’t operating anymore for MHs but their website says differently. I also read that another company wasn’t doing it. What about Doctors on Wheels? Confused!!
Has anyone retained their C1 with obstructive sleep apnoea (not OSA syndrome)? When my husband went to see about his snoring problem, he was told he was borderline but they recommended using a cpap machine obviously. When he asked about his licence (C1 and the DVLA ) they said that he didn’t need to inform DVLA as it wasn’t “syndrome” and that by having a cpap machine it wouldn’t affect his C1 application as there are lorry drivers with this condition who can still drive heavy vehicles - but I suppose they may not be 70.
Last year we bought another MH which is over 3,500 kg and it is what we’ve been looking for for ages. We really don’t want to lose the C1 or we will have to downsize and lose our lovely MH ?
We are worrying about this as he will be 70 at the beginning of April and he has just sent off for the forms ready to complete.
Which companies have you used recently?
Or should he go to own doctors and opticians.
I know there have been lots of posts regarding C1 renewals but we really wanted current opinions please.
Waiting in anticipation for your replies -
Sorry for the long text. Thanks.

I used D4Drivers 3 months ago.. It was the other lot ( canna remember the name ) who got the big heave
I cannot help with SA issue, but I can say if it is not reportable to the DVLA it should have no affect
I worried my self silly before sending off the paper work.. It all came back fine in less than a week :-)

D4Drivers do medicals not specifically for motorhomes but for anyone requiring a medical for driving whether its age related or professional related (also personal choice).
Tbf, I'd not heard that the restrictions on Doctors on Wheels being lifted but I've never used them anyway.

You need to check your statement?
My understanding is that Doctors on Wheels is now being re-accepted by DVLA?
Check their website.
that is from .gov web page a few minutes ago so unless their web page is incorrect it is accurate..

which website please? DVLA .gov web site says not accepted..
I agree with you. I can find that they're no longer accepted but nothing anywhere to say there is no change in the status quo

My husband uses a CPAP machine and it reports back to the sleep clinic to show he is using it. The DVLA did suspend his licence for a few weeks when he first got the machine but as soon as he had a "track record" the suspension was lifted and he has not had a problem since.

When he gets to 70 he has been told to ask the hospital to send the machine data to his GP and then it can all be included with the medical form.

EDIT when he was first diagnosed he was told no need to inform the DVLA unless he wanted to - he decided to play safe and inform them and it was an immediate suspension of the licence. I think his sleep clinic now tell everyone with any form of sleep apnoea to inform the DVLA.

If they are they will be highly scrutinised adding to the time taken.

As long as you have informed DVLA and your sleep apnoea is controlled within the limits you should be OK

The DVLA website is dated 11th Dec 2019.
ok... correct.. all of 1 month old..

can you direct me to more up to date " accuarte" information that would be acceptable to the DVLA on this please.

John has OSA uses his CPAP machine as required, first time of renewing his C1 was quite a faff, mainly because the rules had changed about follow up. Got the licence back in time for his 70th. Medical was done by our at the time GP who didn't charge!! (he does now, but similar price to the online docs, we paid £60. He also kept photocopies of all the correspondence from the last time. This time his C1 came back in less than 2 weeks mine arrived the day after.

Find whichever is still accepted and book appointment taking forms along with you. Simple medical exam and eye test. Tell them if you have notifiable medical conditions and they will tell u what needs reporting. Send the forms with doctors signature to dvla. Licence comes back quite quickly provided no reportable problems.
Mine did last April but the medical was a joke as far as I was concerned although I knew I was in reasonable condition for my age.

Thanks.
Why oh why do people in authority give different advice???
By that I mean hospitals.

We are both coming up for it in the next few months.
A couple of months ago a Funsters reported that the sight test now had to be done by a optician, looking at the info on DVLA site it is still OK for the doctor to sign the form.
Has anyone done it recently with the doctor signing the sight part of the form?

It doesn’t matter about the cost for us as we definitely want to keep the C1 at whatever cost.

So why are you asking about D4D?

Your own doctor knows your medical history not just a 10 minute medical with a stranger, keeping your C1 could have more than a financial cost!

Wonder if it was my post you were thinking of, i wear glasses and GP could have tested and signed the form, but, needed a recent prescription so he could put those details in, I didn't have one recently enough and even if it had been couldn't find the script anyway. The DVLA can refer you for an eye test too I opted t have mine done before I had my medical. no point paying the price of a medical only to find your eyes aren't up to it,

Matamoros I am generally interested about who uses what - your own doctors or other companies. Which is quicker - Not looked into costs at all. How have people with different types of sleep apnoea got on......
Just asking.

To get a medical with my GP takes 3 to 4 weeks ( as they quoted ) D4D was three days !

You are entitled to free eye tests over 60 at your local optician. We've had ours every couple of years since 60.

Yes you do, it pretty much goes over the same questions but that’s goverment departments for you,
I done my renewal in July last year with Doctor on wheels with no problem, But my wife’s application in October for a renewal in November was a pain in the rear,
She didn’t have a photo license or a British passport and the forms only list a British passport as proof of ID,
We sent in P40/ old green license/ NI number/ Proof of residency and two photos signed by a responsible person to say it was her,
Needless to say it all comes back with no explanation, only after speaking with there helpline ( and that’s another story I won’t go into here) it transpired she needed to send in her Irish passport to prove who she was,

After a couple of weeks it all come back again asking for a full eye test by an optician giving 7 Days or the whole Licence application would be cancelled, ( Why 7 Day and not more time?) so quickly get Eye test done and a third special signed for delivery ( Not cheap) and her new license arrived back on the 16 December,
Her new licence expires on the 10 December 2022 so she has gain a month for all the hassle,
Good luck with your application :giggle:

That is correct, The DVLA returned my D4, and wanted an Opticians signature on the (Optical part of the) form not my Doctor. My doctor had taken the information from my last Opticians record still in date BTW. and transferred the information to my D4. That was unacceptable according to the DVLA.

Now, I have heard, that IF your Doctor has the equipment to carry out an eye test (not just the chart on the wall BTW). they will accept it. BUT that is hearsay.

Not that it bothered me, I just kept on driving under the DLVA`s own rules.

I used one of the mobile ones (Doctors on wheels I think) and thought I would use my regular optician for the eye test. Being over 70 means the test is free but there was a £10 charge for the printout. Sent is off with the other forms only to have it rejected as the units of measurement they'd used for the eye test weren't the ones they should have used. Took it back and got another printout with the correct units on and sent it off again and got the new licence back within a week.

Lenny, just renewed my C Doctor did the eye test bit. The doctor needs to be approved to do it so check before booking docs. Last year Doc told me I was OK and turned out I was not. I did not check what he had written.!!!!! Anyway DVLA told me to go to optician and get new test and or glasses. Failure would result in my C being cancelled. All heavy handed. But got glasses and all OK. Must have been a fluke as this year my eyes were good enough without glasses. Still have an 01 (need glasses) next to C. But I love my binoculars so I wear them driving all the time now.
