I'm looking at getting a camera to enable us to keep an eye on our 10 year old lab when we leave her in the motorhome. This one looks great but I'm not very techie and not sure if it will run on 12v when we are off grid. I know it also needs wifi but am i correct in thinking the mifi will be the ok?

Not sure my link is working?

you could use a simple interior IP camera plugs into a USB socket and can send warnings to your mobile or just tap the app and watch the dog....

there are loads but this is the basic idea

Amazon product ASIN B00XBTRZVE
we have fitted them at home and while away can look at who has or is in the house or put it in the van and do the same..

The link doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Off the top of my head the issues might be the amount of data it uses. This will be a lot less if it just sends a still image every few seconds. Live video will be more but if you are only running it for a few hours at a time this may not be too much.

The MiFi will provide the WiFi assuming it can connect to the local broadband.

I've made a device which emails me every thirty minutes the internal MH temperature, which is the important thing. I think they might be available commercially but I don't know who from.

That looks a lot like the one i have linked to but i would appreciate if someone can confirm the one I've chosen will function on 12v and mifi.

that is powered by USB... so you would need a usb set up in the van which costs a few pounds only.

as long as it is connected to the internet you can view it from your phone. mifi would do that.

but as DBK has saID AMOUNT OF DATA USED should be considered.

I suspect it's this one you are trying to link to??

I is the one up from that but perhaps we should get the lower res one as it would use less data? Ok new question... Will it use data all the time it's on or just if we connect to the live stream and when it detects movement and sends an alert?

The van we are getting has usb plugs already but as I'm new to motorhomes i don't understand much about different voltages.

you can set it to record only when movement is detected, therefoere data will be used only then, the movement can be saved to an sd card or cloud.

i recently used the 30 day free trial to cloud on one of ours while we were in France, set it to record to cloud only when movement detected.

each day i opened the app and you can instantly see the times there was activity... if there was any... you click on the time of that activity and it plays it too you. you can also connect direct to the camera to see instant ly what is happening.

USB is 5volts and have differing Amp available output but a standard usb will be ok.

I suspect it will "PING" the network is live every now again but that will be kb of data and nothing to worry about.
The last thing I would be doing is setting it to detect movement and alerting your phone and consequently data usage will be insane as the dog moves about..
As long as you are on hookup I see no other issues with having the MiFi and this camera plugged in and on.

Oh and don't use cloud storage or this will use up data!!
Record to the SD card in the camera (you'll need to get one as they don't come with one)

set it to record movement not ping you we do that at home when we monitor the dog. otherwise as Andy has said you will be contantly looking at the phone and using sheds of data.

If we had one on our dogs set to record on movement it would never record anything:D. Unless something needs doing they sleep. One has been up in my study for the last four hours and has turned over once.
People say Border Collies like a lot of exercise, I think working ones get a lot but it's not their preference. A couple of hours of running madly about and 22 hours kip to recover.

Edit, just noticed the other one is here too. She hasn't moved much either.

Apparently the one I'm looking at has an algorithm that can be set to ignore animal /insect movement but trigger for human forms being detected. We will not often be on hookup though so definitely need to make sure it works on 12v

hi Helen, have a look at gadget johns you tube channel one of his recent reviews were on security camera ,think it was a neao something or other about £25

Hi Helen ,just been on gadget johns site the camera is a neos smartcam think I will buy one myself

Sold out so there's only minimal details.
It's a NETVUE Home Security Camera 1080P, Compatible with Alexa Echo Show, 1080P if you view it on amazon it has full details not sure why link is blocked.

I use a Neos Smartcam in the Moho - £24.99 from Amazon - and it only uses data when movement is detected, when it sends an alert over the van’s mifi to my ‘phone. Plugs into a 5v usb socket.

Ah hopefully this one will be similar to yours as it just arrived in the post today!

I've bought the netvue. Testing it at home at the moment but will see how it goes when we get the van next week!
