Ok so I've got a van in mind with a payload of 540, I am planning to get this upplated, will be travelling with a dog 2 adults and a child. Is this going to be a major issue. There is another possible van with a higher initial payload, 800, but the dealer is the other end of the country whereas the first option is actually in my town which makes things easier for obvious reasons!

Do you have the licence?
How heavy are your family inc the dog?
Have either of the vans been weighed to know the real payload figures?
What can you uplate to? With or without physical adjustments [air assist, tyres]
What are the maximum axle weights? [Not much use uprating if the van is at those limits]

Lenny HB will be along shortly to say you need a minimum of 1 tonne payload :giggler:
Most of us will suggest a little less.

Yes I have the licence to drive a heavier vehicle.

we're not a heavy bunch so that's not a problem.

I've got a photocopy of a weighbridge ticket from today so have correct weight. I've just called SVTech and now seeking further information about uprating.

Will come back asap when I know how high we can get!

So it looks like I can potentially achieve the magical 1000 with this van, if I do the maximum modification. The guy at SVTech said that given I can reach 740 with the paper exercise I may not need to given who/ what I intend to carry.

Required payload is very much a personal thing and is entirely dependany on how much gear you want/need to cary with you. 540kg would be enough for us (2 adults plus dog) as after 11 years we've whittled down what we carry to what we use. Only you can answer that question, but at least you're starting with an accurate figure - as long as yu're not eceeding individual axle weights which unfortunately is far too easy to do with some of the huge garages that some manufacturers make a feature of. I presume you know what was included in that weighbridge ticket e.g. fuel, water tank, any passenger etc.

Just a tip - water weighs (more or less) 1kg per litre so a full 100 litre tank will lose you 100kg of payload. Now if you don't need to carry a full tank..................................!
