Helen and I are thinking of Xmas abroad, flying, not with the camper. Fancy somewhere a bit warmer with lots to do. Anyone spent Xmas there, would you recommend it?

Thanks

We once spent Christmas in the Canaries, it was weird.

Fat bald English men, with the tattoos obviously, sitting outside in baking hot sunshine eating a full English Christmas Dinner.

Completely soulless, wouldn't do it again.

I think you need further South if you fancy warmth. Maybe 500 miles South.

I think the Canaries are the place to get reasonably good weather but I don't think we'd bother. It depends if you fancy Skeggie in May for Christmas Day

..a better option weatherwise would be the Canaries....it's much warmer there..
As long as you don't mind a sprinkling of black dust over everything ?
Seriously, it is a great winter destination, in normal times quite pricey accommodation over Christmas, no idea atm with the virus ?

Love Mallorca, did Christmas there once.......never again..........weather awful, cold, short days, many restaurants closed.................. dead

And they all used to take it with them.one lot would have the turkey another the veg ,3rd the mince pies and pudding ,others the cake and all in cabin hand luggage.

In 1990, I ran in the Mallorca Marathon, held in mid-December so as to avoid the heat of summer……half-way round, it started to snow, and got slightly chilly(!). However, the following year we spent Xmas in Palma, and the weather was very mild, between 15/20 C, and the sun shone most days. We had a great time. The warmest weather we had at Xmas was in Benidorm ( o_O ) - shorts and T-shirts every day (y)

Funny comments about the canaries at Christmas. We have had two great holidays over Christmas and newyear not a sprout or scroat in site. Fabulous time fantastic food and entertainment . Warm weather on the beach Christmas day even in the sea happy memories.

There is a lot more to the Canary Islands than Lineker’s bar in Tenerife, for example go take a look at La Gomera.

We are regulars to La Gomera - a 45-minute ferry and a world away from Tenerife. :giggle: (y)

A very “typical” view of the Canaries, but if people go to those kind of areas, that’s what you will see. Same in many countries.

As someone who has a home there, nowhere near the fat tattooed brigade, I can tell you there are a lot of lovely places to visit and very welcoming people. Of course English isn’t the main language where my place is, you actually do need a little Spanish to get by😳.

And having to move out of the sun on Xmas day as it was too hot was the highlight of the day👍

Were the fat, bald men with tattoos enjoying their dinner?

I wonder what they thought of you as you walked by judging...

(maybe they thought you were being silly.)

In my working life we did Tenerife or Lanzarote over the Christmas period, preferred Tenerife but that could have just been the location and apartment, but the weather is more reliable down there. 😁

Where we live in Spain we can see the Balearic islands on a clear day. 😎 Bob.

You must have gone to a horrible place. It's lovely where we live :)

Ignorant folk like to knock our beautiful islands.

That's not a judgment, more a statement of fact. The bar we dallied in yesterday for an afternoon drink was well populated with same!

If you are in the city of Palma it wont be too bad. It's a commercial city and port so stuff will be open. The resorts will be dead and depressing.

Saying that though, it's a small city and you soon get bored. If you are lucky then it can be warm and sunny during the day at that time of year but it's a real lottery. It could equally be cold wet and windy. I would liken it to October in England but with shorter days.

If you don't like the Canaries then Alicante, Seville or Malaga are better options.

Enjoyed Teneriffe up the North many years ago,,went to Grand Canary 3 years ago and an absolute waste of money..Much prefer mainland Spain even if its cooler in winter.BUSBY.

There are some stunning places in the Canaries. Have spent Xmas there several times.
Honestly didn’t see any fat bald tattooed men and certainly didn’t see anywhere as grim as Skegness. Try Lajares or Moro Jable on Fuerteventura. The north of Tenerife is also lovely. San Cristobal de la Laguna is a fascinating town if you want life, both day and night, without yobbos.

Im off justbefore xmas and just after , have to be home to cook xmas dinner

Thanks everyone for all the help and comments, we have decided to go to Tenerife for the sunshine, have booked 10 days over Xmas and New Year in a lovely suite at Hotel Botanico in Puerto de la Cruz, should be a lovely relaxing break.

thanks again
Bill

Shouldn't Brits have Christmas Dinner in Spain?
