A post from Glencoe Mountain Resort taken from FB

As you know we welcome campervans and people sleeping in there cars overnight at Glencoe Mountain but ask that when you arrive late in the evening that you either park in a marked space or right at the outer edge of the overspill car park. This avoids you getting in the way of our snow clearance efforts and avoids blocking the car park on busy days. Also avoids us having to wake you early in the morning.

If you are not spending money on site but are planning to use the facilities (toilets, bins, waste disposal etc) then we have introduced a voluntary donation scheme to help cover costs. Boxes are sited around the car park.

After a recent busy weekend of campervans we were slightly perturbed to find just 17p in our donation boxes.

A few £££s from everyone wouldn't go amiss. Please give generously.

What a shame, but to quote their own words, if some thing on the site suggests stay for free if you use our food outlets that might account for it, but it would really piss me off if I owned it and all they do is use (abuse) free parking o_O

I have often wondered how these honesty boxes work out, we stayed at Hawes the other weekend with a similar scheme in the cattle market and Glen Caple has the same, I am sure there are plenty of others, wonder what proportion pay anything, I don't think Glen Caple gives an amount to leave, but surely a minimum £5 is still very cheap for anywhere that lets you overnight like these

Most "honesty schemes" which we have been associated with have brought in more than we expected. This story is a sad reflection on some folk and, therefore, a sad reflection on all of us.

Not that I would park there but I also saw this on a Facebook motorhome forum and made the same comment

"Voluntary donation "

Means if you want to

It's not compulsory , so if they want to make a charge for parking then make a charge for parking. If you make it optional then yes some will and some wont.

It also states "suggested amount "

I can guarantee if public carparks in towns etc had machines that said "suggested amounts " or voluntary contribution there would be a lot of empty parking meters

Lots of nicer places to stay up there though so personally would have no inclination to park there.

Hang about. It says if you are not using any of the facilities on the site then a donation would be appreciated. Everyone who was there that weekend could have been spending money and not just being a FLT

So why does this site change (F) (L) (T) into FLT? :)

Personally I have no issues handing over a few quid if I stay at a donation site.
If I park in a car park most times I have to pay so a few quid for overnight is no hardship in my opinion.

Actually it doesn't

But as I said above "Voluntary " is voluntary
Maybe the guy emptying the boxes is on the take.

I'm a little surprised at 17p from numerous boxes

Better than "Freelance Lizard Ticklers " :)

From the operator's point of view, honesty schemes save having to install and maintain expensive machines and software, leaving more for upkeep of the area.
From the user's point of view it means not having to worry about having the correct amount of money.

Other than that, honesty schemes are as much about respect as anything.
The operator respects the user as being someone who has more manners than to take something for nothing.
The user respects the fact that the operator has made the facility available.

No doubt I shall receive the usual flak for daring to mention the "R" word :-)

What does anyone expect?. Regardless of one`s personal opinion, The last couple of Generations have been largely (not exclusively) Raised in the "Greed is good" self interest model. And those whom "they" hold as "Role Models" are of the same outlook, as are our politicians, and those who are employed as public administrators. E.g. NHS front-line staff are largely brilliant, the system is let down by a plethora of "Jobsworths" and "Suits", all looking to feather bed their own little "kingdoms".

Why are you surprised, this why its getting harder and harder to park overnight. If there was a parking area that charged 50p per night and one not quite as good was free.
which one would you park in ? answers on a postage stamp.

It's only getting hard if you're stupid.

In 28 years I've never once struggled to find a free wild spot in Scotland.

But parked up with a load of others at Glencoe mountain has never appealed to me.

Especially as I know of at least a dozen quiet beautiful spots within a 10 minute drive of that place.

What I'm surprised at is 17p being the total from not one box but numerous boxes on a day he states there were quite a few vans.
I just find that very strange and maybe a little hard to believe.
So not one van left a donation ?

Each van might have either been even more tight fisted than us scots or thought a few the other vans would cough up instead. I will always stick around £4 in an honesty box, maybe a fiver if it has a service on offer.
