We were going to go to France and Spain at the beginning of September but we cancelled it due to palaver. Anyway, what a good job we did! We've been to the south coast but had to come home early because our dog was drinking a massive amount and peeing for England.

The vet has diagnosed kidney failure. We're both upset, of course, but we've changed her diet and she seems to be plodding on. She's 12, so it's not really surprising that something is wearing out. This news has scuppered all our plans for next year. We're just taking one day at a time. 💔

Good advice Dryad, thanks.

I’m sorry she has been poorly  she is lovely:love: I’m sure once she is settled on the new diet and any medication she will be feeling better. I hope you have many more happy times together.

It always hurts so much when they are not well as they put their complete trust in us. Give her your best and hope she carries on ok without discomfort.

Awww what a sweetie

Our 2 are 12 now and still have mad spurts of energy but spend most of their time sleeping. its horriable as they get old and you know their time is short. Enjoy her while she is with you - a lovely looking dog

Sorry to hear your dog is poorly, I hope her new diet will allow you to have some longer time together.

Sorry to hear about your dog... our cat has kidney problems, but with a low protein diet and daily medicine she is perfectly ok.

Thanks for the lovely thoughts everyone. :h:

Sorry to here about you’re doggy problems. When we took on Paddy he was being treated for bladder problems, blood in his urine and possible stones.
He has been re checked and seems to getting past the problems. We have to keep him on special meal with his dinner. As much as he is a bit of a worry to us just to give him a bit longer life he is worth it.
She is a lovely looking girl that must have a special place in you’re hearts.

Very sorry to hear about your dog. Our boy was struggling with spine and front leg issues earlier this year and he temporarily couldn't use his back legs. Thought we would lose him but he has rallied. It is heartbreaking and it takes a while to get from being so upset to trying to focus on one day at a time. They are part of our families and the good days are precious. I hope she is comfortable and picks up with tlc and meds.

She looks lovely. Hope she has a few more years of quality life.

Sorry to hear of your dog's problems, when they get old and ailing it's upsetting. Our dog is over 13yrs, deaf, trouble with back legs with torn cruciate ligament, like yours drinks and wees for ever. We have now picked up on the signs when he needs water and when he needs a wee, most of the time. We have also bought some dog nappies if we think the need requires them plus they are great for soaking up any mishaps.

We have also bought a dog trolley and used it a lot over last 2 weeks. We can get out and now he is loving it. We took him out a 5 mile walk today, he sat in his trolley most of the time and really enjoyed it.

So there are ways for both you and your dog to still try and enjoy each other.

Hope she gets along OK.

I'm so very sorry you've had this news. Sending hugs and good wishes to you all xx

Sorry to hear about your dog. Casper is showing his age, his back legs are getting weak and he has lost his bark, he sleeps most of the time.
We have had dogs all our lives, but we never get used to playing God when they get old.

Sorry to hear that. Our previous dog had similar issues but with an insatiable appetite. Discovered it was Cushings. With the right meds he lived a couple of years longer.

Ours took ill at the end of our holiday in France and refused his evening walk. To cut a long story short the vet has diagnosed a chest tumour with fluid around his heart she says no treatment possible and days rather than weeks. Hes getting lots of treats!. Its a sad time.

Sending huge sympathy from us - really sorry, I didn't mean to "like" your post, meant to send a heart but had a doh moment.

The thing is everyone knows that sooner or later it's going to happen (unless you beat them to it!) but human nature is that you ignore it. I feel a bit guilty now as I'm sort of hoping he just goes peacefully asleep under a tree like the dog the dogwalker next door used to look after rather than we have the decision to make at the vets.
