That's correct, and Elddis were named after the man who invented the colander. I believe Bailey was the name of the person who first discovered non drying bathroom sealant as well.

I wonder at what point Hymer changed its name from Hitler :imoutahere:

Considering the original Laika set off on a long journey and never returned it does make you wonder if that's a brilliant brand image for a Motorhome, but there you go. :)

Good question, Google Hymer History and there is a gap between being founded in 1923 and 1952. Not unusual in German company history. The beer house in Munich has a similar gap in it's history but was the site of a famous Hitler rally.

I suppose it could have originally been called "Himmler"

I have it on good authority that dethleffs were originally called de fuhrer and that Autotrail were originally established as a Vatican side-line and called AutoGrail

Actually Elddis Transport – Elddis is Siddle spelt backwards – was formed in 1971, by Siddle’s son and Nigel Cook’s father Geoffrey. The same family formed the now totally separate Consett company of Elddis Caravans.

Poor dog died early from overheating because of a system failure. Not really a great basis for naming a product. I believe the Russians stuck with space dogs because the American's monkeys sometimes died of heart failure before reaching orbit.

I guess to be fair to the company if Russia only admitted that the poor dog died early in the flight and was actually not a cosmanautic hero of the Soviet Union in 2002 it was too late to change the name to something more appropriate. Like Dolly The Sheep Motorhomes Ltd or Champion the Wonder Horse Motorhomes. Or even Skippy Motorhomes.......

We were in Moscow last winter and visited the Cosmonauts museum. They had the space suits from the dogs that did return and quite thoughtful suits they were. It was obvious from the suits that they were only for dogs and from photos of the time they were treasured as Russian heroes and loved by the scientists who cared for them.
It's a must see place if you are ever in Moscow.

Here's a few photos of spacedog equipment. Rosie says they were all (12 of them) female dogs as they didn't have to cock their legs! Think she made that up...
