Re canned laughter... Gerard Hoffnung gave this talk live to the Oxford Union students debate in around 1958. This is just a snippet from a much longer speech.

They probably went on to be politicians, they laugh up their sleeves at us.
I never found Benny Hill, Morecombe & Wise or the two Ronnies the least bit funny either but I suppose many did.
