Hi I am new to AdBlue . Do I wait until the computer tells me it needs topping up or should I top up regularly when a home?

I see Aldi have AdBlue on offer I think at about £8 for 10 lt.

I found the spout that comes with the adblue (Aldi) was a bit short so had to add an extension from a spare piece of plastic water pipe so just be aware.if the spout doesn't open the flap on the filler tube it does bubble back.

It won’t hurt just to top up when you see fit..obviously you don’t want to run out 😬 Be careful when handling as it can make an awful mess as I have found to my cost on a works vehicle thankfully. I now use a liquid pump to get it into the van. 👍

For the little you would use I would top up at the hgv pumps at a garage, it will always be fresh stuff then not stale.

I always wait until the top up light comes on .Apparently if you top up too regularly the engine management system thinks your not using Adblu and can derate ! Im sure i will be corrected.

Thanks for all the replies.

I would top up before the warning. Isn't there some who have had problems after the light has appeared with it not going off?

Yes, IRHP, my warning light came on after about 4500 miles and I added about 10 litres to fill. However, the warning light didn’t go out. I drove around for 50 miles or so but still wouldn’t go out. Spoke to local Peugeot garage who took it in and sorted In about 15 minutes. Minor computer glitch which they said I couldn’t cure but no charge. They said it sometimes happens but not very often.

I bought a siphon pump for £16 from eBay as below. Then very easy to top up from container and no spills. You can hear when the level gets to the top. Now I just top up every 1k miles and on long trips take the pump with me.

Yes. Don’t buy off a garage forecourt where it may have been hanging around in the sun for weeks. HGV pump is best option but not possible for my van, so I buy off a big supplier online. Same price as in Halfrauds anyway

I would worry about contamination with something like that unless carefully cleaned and stored. I use a dedicated funnel and tube and always wait until I can get a 10 litre container’s worth in so no half empty containers hanging around. Maybe I am being too cautious but know a few people who have had AdBlue contamination issues with their cars

Get a long hose and decent funnel.
Keep it in a bag to keep it clean

Filling with AdBlue is not a job to do in the dark or in a hurry, as you really don't want to spill any.
Keep gloves and kitchen towels handy when filling and ideally have a person to hold the funnel .

Personally I'd wait until the warning light comes on, and then dump in an entire 10L container.
I'd do it as infrequently as possible.
(Roughly 10 liters for every 10k miles)

According to my online manual (Citroen Relay bluehdi)......

"the system only registers top ups of 5 litres or more"

Yes the hgv pump will be used every day so not much chance of it going stale

Exactly! Due to the letterbox access to the engine and the filler under the bonnet, refilling mine is a real challenge. Same as the screen wash

EDIT: just found the other thread!

That's an interesting consumption figure. My '21 Ducato required a top-up at 1770 miles. I added 10L. I did wonder if it had been completely filled (19 litres) at PDI? A friend has commented that it's about right as his Ford machine only does 1500 - 2000 miles before requiring a top up. What's the general experience with Adblue consumption in the Ducato? Mines a 140 bhp Auto.

I've not got enough mileage to know my consumption (2018 Mercedes).
I'm working on 1L per 1K miles as a rule of thumb

Why would they? It is a consumable the same as fuel. They don't fill it with fuel if they can help it?

I average about 180 miles per Ltr, 180bhp 9 speed Ducato.

I was going to suggest that you just piss in the filler, but the alcohol content from many members here would be way too high

I were told, for my coach's when AdBlue first came about, NOT to add too frequently as it can confuse the ECU and a warning light will appear on dash. (see #14 earlier) which the 'Ministry' are not too happy about! (This advice may have change since then?)
