Hymer Classic
Hello, hope this post is in the right place. Can anyone advise me while I sit at the roadside, first time in my life broken down with clutch problems near the m62 junction 25 near Brigghouse with recovery truck on the way hopefully today. Clutch pedal gone have to lift the pedal by hand and can not engage any gears. It’s a Hymer on a Fiat Ducato 2.3 year 2006. Can not see a master cylinder and no obvious fluid leaks, suppliers tell me it does not have a cable clutch. Has anyone had similar probs, went very suddenly?

It’s a hydraulic clutch. So has master and slave cylinder. Slave is inside bell housing and what has properly failed.

You can probably start it whilst in gear and drive to get you to safety if required.
Slave cylinder is probably the issue as stated. Not familiar with the Ducato engines but my Boxer with the Ford engine has it on the outside of the Bell housing and very easy to replace. Easy to get the parts as well. Did the job myself

Can not see a master cylinder and no obvious fluid leaks,
Master cylinder is attached to the clutch pedal usually & on the firewall. The slave cylinder ,which is usually what the problem will be,is inside the gearbox. If you attempt to bleed it for a wahile fluid will eventually come out the weephole at the bottom of the bell housing

Thank you, we are in the process of being recovered now. Do you know how difficult the slave cylinder work is, trying to way up to take home or to a repairshop. Also would you know if the clutch and breaks share the fluid reservoir

Thanks for your comments buddy, we made it home and took the MH straight to a workshop. Bracing for the verdict!

Slave cylinder went in our van a couple of years ago, cost about £1100 for a new clutch, cylinder and flywheel.

2006 I think that will be a x244 if so I think the slave cylinder is on the outside of the bellhousing if so you are quids in over the x250

There is bad news and good news.
The bad news.
It will be an “O” ring on the slave cylinder. Lowest price component in the clutch system. Insist on Valeo or LUK parts.
You are looking at 4 figures !!!
The good news
Mine failed in France. Waited 5 days in garage car park to have it done.
I was charged (screwed) 2900€ !!!
I insisted on LUK and checked the boxes.
You won’t pay that much.
I was a tourist and at their mercy.
Came in around £2500.
Even worse, my 2 sons own a garage.
Parts would be trade and no labour costs 😢

Mine, a similar age, failed in Spain last year. Managed to get it home without too much drama and my usual garage diagnosed master cylinder ('cos it's an easier job). It turned out not to be, and they said that their workshop wasn't really big enough for a gearbox removal, which is what was needed. Have to say there was no evidence of a leak anywhere, which was a bit puzzling.
They did, however, recommend a commercial garage quite close by who came and collected the m/h and did the repair, fitting a new clutch at the same time (145000 miles, though it didn't actually need it). Came to under £1000 if I remember correctly.

You were only half a mile from Fiat professional. Maybe your workshop will be cheaper tho.
Don't know about that but the garage I have had the motor home dropped to has a very good name, the owner came back to the premises when we landed at 8:30pm, to open up for us, they have three clutch changes and an engine to do before our MH and they said it should be striped down next Friday. When we loaded the vehicle in Brighouse and started on the way home we dropped down the bank straight onto an industrial estate so I guess on reflexion there would most likely have been someone I could have gone to but I would not have known if they had a good reputation and we would have most likely spent a good few days holidaying on an industrial site so not ideal. Had I been a bit more tech Savvy I would maybe have had a look on Google maps but the thought never entered my head. I think the cost is likely to be quite high but gone are the days where I would have done the repair. I have read that the flywheel's are not really suitable for skimming so if damaged they are often replaced as the job is a bit labour intensive its not sensible to risk leaving them un-touched. On the bright side if I look after it, it will possible be the last clutch I will need to buy, the gov will see to that. Thank you for the messages.

In this case I think I am praying for bad luck. Slave cylinder is definitely not leaking, it sits atop of the bell housing and seems to be fine. Thinking that the center of the clutch plate has collapsed but will find out when it is stripped down. If I can get photos and prices I will post them for ref. It may give others a bit of a guide.

The fiat garage is on the left on the main road of that estate.
