My sat nav is playing up...what's the best replacement?

Do you want a ‘dedicated’ unit…..?

Garmin Camper 890 I think is great 👍

My choice is Garmin too - but that’s because I have a Garmin wireless camera…… (y)

Garmin Camper 1080 - super large screen, and large vehicle aware.

Any camper specific SatNav will work best because you can put details about height, weight, width of vehicle in. Look for free updates, e.g. for maps, amd also whether it has live updates for traffic issues. Like anything else the more you pay the more you get. But I was lucky and got a bargain with mine becuse Q TV (telly sales channel) had them on offer. Mine's a Garmin Camper 780 and I would highly recommend it. It uses a phone app to sync with and get live traffic updates.

Absolutely, and here's mine. ;)
A 7" or 9" Xgody Chinese Truck Sat Nav, then update the files as soon as you take it out the box. (y) They are between a quarter and a third of the price of TomTom, Garmin and Snooper.
Been using ours for many years now across areas of Western Europe, and it's hardly put a foot wrong. :) More often than not, it's me that gets it wrong, by occasionally not trusting the unit's suggested route or turning. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Very happy with our Navpal, £70 from Amazon, used it to Spain and back without any issues. You can put your sizes in it and the 7" screen is very clear.

Another vote for the garmin camper, with one reservation, it had a complete brainfart in Nice last week, it absolutely insisted any route from our camp 10 k out of Nice to the Ferry port had to go via Calais and oddly Google maps wasn't much better, had a very fraught hour trying to catch our ferry to corsica! Happily some very nice gendarmes led us round a illegal u-turn and escorted us onto the correct road. So looks like some have got over Brexit 😐

I've got Tom Tom... don't use it...Co Pilot MH version...don't use...Google Maps...yep find that more use....my maps are live....blockages can be avoided....if need be...

Same here. Navpal hasn't sent us down any daft steep/winding lanes - unlike Tom Tom.

Very jealous. I love Corsica, we've been 3 times, [ flying in though]. The Calanques are worth a drive through.
Mike.

Photos, we need lots of photos of Corsica.
Please

If you are a member of the Camping and Caravan Club they have a discount code for Halfords on the Garmin Camper 780, this brings it down to £208.00.

Can’t go wrong with a paper map
I agree. Unfortunately my co-pilot and navigator sometimes has a problem. She, aka The Duchess,is fine going north because turning left is turning left. Going south and turning left is turning right….

We tend to use map for bulk of the journey and satnav for the last few miles.

That’s what we do but have to say my wife is a pretty good navigator I also think it makes the journey interesting in that the navigator is plotting the journey and occasionally along the route we will stop off at a place or a village that we may have just driven past if we had solely relied on the sat nav.

Saw this on Facebook it

would be a good buy if it’s as stated.

Please explain this turning left is to turn right?
I’ll try. If you are heading south, then you go from the top of the map page to the bottom. If you take a left turn on the road, you are then going to the right on the map!! Yes?? My darling wife sometimes gets confused by that. Hope that helps. :giggle:

That is cheap. I wonder if the internal battery is knackered, and if so, can it be easily replaced?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Rita used to turn the map round, to point in the direction we were heading. ;)
Since the use of a Sat Nav, she hasn’t read a map for years now. :whatthe:

Cheers,

Jock. :)

When I met Ann she couldn't read a map to save her life, if I asked her to look at one while driving she panicked and said it just looks like a load of jumbled up wires.

Over the years I told her what all the lines were, and said imagine if you're looking down from the sky, and I remember the moment she realised the numbers on the motorway were the junction numbers, and the same numbers were on the bottom of the motorway signs🤩!

By the time we were going to Benidorm she was a great map reader, she'd write things of interest on the map and point things out and tell me the next town to head for 😍

I'd just put Google maps on for the destination, which is the stress free way to drive I've found 👍

Going back a few years, I had one of the early dedicated Garmin bicycle sat navs that supported full routing. It had a very interesting bug that whenever you approached a roundabout it told you turn left - the image was correct though, showing e.g. third exit and effectively a right turn.
The problem was, when you exit a roundabout, you turn left to get off it, so that's what the Garmin told you to do!

Surprised at how many rate the Garmin Camper sat navs, i bought one, we keep the van in storage 2nd direction less than a hundred yards is turn left, a no through road into someones drive, next half a mile away is turn right into a livery yard, next is only a few yards further on into another stables. To get to the Motorway it tries to take us through country roads i don't even like using with the doblo, have tried increasing size and weight of van with no improvement , have tried all the permutations about types of route too, still wants to take us partly on single track roads to get to the motorway, despite a good sensible route.
Would i trust it abroad? Would i sh**e
Edited to add i always look at the route on the map unfortunately my co-pilot is usually asleep so no help when the sat nav tries to divert us (we use our old TomTom) and then refuses to check. Have never forgiven him for having to arrive at the wrong end of the Somport tunnel 😡
edited again to say maybe the garmin is for sale as it is rubbish
