Hope that one of you computer wizards can help me :
About a week ago I turned outlook express on and I got over a thousand emails overnight !
All of them with a title of 'undelivered mail' or 'returned mail' or 'failure notice'. Lots of them from Mailer-Demon, also from postmaster@...., and from 'mail delivery system'.
Over the last few days I've only been getting upto 30 a day, but this morning they're back with a vengeance, 596, and the days only half over !
How can I stop these ?

None of the mails have my exact email address, they all have weird names in front of the '@' with my correct 'after the @' address.

Hope someone can help.

Allen

once you are on the list it is difficult to get off it. In outlook express go to messages at the top of the screen, select create rule from message, in the subject field enter undelivered mail or whatever the title is, then tick delete from server and save the rule. You can put several condition using the or option so all three of those would fit in one rule, play with it it is fairly easy to understand.
that should cut them down a bit, as other titles or words, viagra etc crop up do the same and create new rules. Good luck, the other option is to download a spamwasher but a lot of those sort the mail after you have already downloaded it.
Good luck

I agree with wildman whenever you give your email addy, there is a chance spammers will get hold of it.

If your email addy is my name @my email client .com your chances of bulk spamming would increase.

You need to check your filter settings and rules;however you will not stop them all.

Mailwasher which one of the best free reliable spam filter Click here
quote
Delete. unwanted e-mails before you download to your computer. You'll be able to see who the email is from, the subject, and the attachment. This will enable you to decide if you want to delete the email or keep it. A great way to stop viruses, large attachments or to just delete unnecessary emails from getting to your computer.

To stop them all today............create a new email addy (may be not what you want to do)

Best to use a separate email addy when joining sites etc.

Hi Allen,

I assume that you are using your own domain name?

If so, what may have happened is that a spammer has spoofed your domain name as the sender of a spam message to potentially millions of email addresses. They have also used a script that randomises the bit in front of the '@'

E.G. If your domain name is wobble.com then the spam has been sent from random@wobble.com

What you are getting are the out of office replies, invalid recipent etc. bouncebacks as you have got your mail setup to deliver ALL mail sent to 'anything@wobble.com' to your mailbox.

Not a lot you can do I'm afraid, except...

Set your mailserver to re-direct or delete all mail not sent to 'allen@wobble.com' this way only mail sent direct to you will get through. Further to this you could setup your mail server to allow seceral aliases (alan, allan etc.) to forward your mailbox so that you get the mispelt genuine emails too.

If you do the above (or get your isp or IT helper to do it) then the emails to random addresses will still happen, but not trouble you as they will not appear in your inbox.

Unfortunately you may find that your domain will now be blacklisted on some mailservers and you may have trouble sending emails to some people.

Hey Wildman (& Sinbab), I've done the filter bit via email messages, 700 + disappeared into cyberspace delete box ! Thanks.

Bryan, I'll need a bit of tuition for your advice, and I'm keen to do it.
Do you remember our Morecambe Lodge meet, only us 2 there ! Your profile's changed, what's happened to your RV ?

As for you Pappa J, I'd sooner you hadn't taken the trouble, you must have better things to do, not very helpful.

Thanks

Allen
