Motorhome or money pit

We bought a new motorhome earlier this year and up to yet we have not stopped buying things for it. It's like kitting out another house. When do you known when you have enough stuff.
When you get pulled at a checkpoint and are three tons overweight😩😂

We have (without wishing to brag (just explains the story)). Read on….

A house in the UK
House in spain
Motorhome
Touring caravan

Wife goes into B&M, the Range, home bargains, TK maxx etc

4 of these , 4 of those ….

Rather than trying to work out what you think you'll need - you probably won't - it's better to start with the minimum, do a few trips and see what you find you really do need. I use a few rules for a well-equipped motorhome that travels light:
- How many people travel? If 2 people you don't need 6 mugs; 2 is the minimum and 4 is generous.
- Things have to be functional and preferably dual purpose; a silicone mat works as an oven mitt and a trivet and it takes up minimum space. A nice tumbler does for juice, g&t and wine.
You can go on and on buying things you might need but emptying it for a habitation check etc will turn into a massive chore. Travel light!

If you didnt have all those houses you'd be able to shop in marks and spencer

I know its just because I own a hire company but I truly believe that ownership will drop and people will either lease or hire in future. They're getting more and more expensive to own.

Really interested to understand what makes you think this, other than I’m sure (due to your business interests) some clever business modelling, but what underlying behavioural changes pertaining to Motorhomes are driving this?

I think its more financial than behavioural. Ownership is super expensive. So much so that I don't actually own one for myself. As much as I'd love to I just can't justify the expense. I only ever go away in them once a year too.

Most of us go away multiple times a year even if it's just for weekends. When we were working we used to go away at least twice a month as well as a 3 week holiday and a couple of one week holidays. Since retirement we tend to do a couple of months at least during the year as well short breaks. So for us it is worth owning. Don't think we could justify hiring that often!

Aah, okay I understand now, you’re looking at it from a casual user perspective then. I will do 200 nights in mine this year, would be very expensive using a hire approach. I would imagine many funsters will be using their Motorhomes for 10 weeks plus in a twelve month period…

What kind of research have you done into this? Where is the break point between a hire approach and owning one in terms of average total cost per night owned vs hired?

Apart from the financial aspects there is the convenience factor of having one's own MH loaded with personal gear, from own bedding down to one's favourite chairs, glasses and herbs.

I would hate to have to load/unload all that lot into a rental MH - could take a day off each end of the trip, which in our last trip could have reduced it from 6 days to 4 days. No thanks.

we bought our first motor home in February, we’ve been away in it about twenty times so far this year including a two week break , we’ve got another six breaks (including a three week one) planned so far with no doubt more to follow , seven of these have been to music festivals.
having hired a small motorhome last year for five days for one music festival I think We’ll recoup our original outlay and all subsequent running costs after three years and possibly two as we have tickets for the Rugby World Cup in France next year (six weeks hire to France for the cup will surly be eye watering)😱
as has been said if you only plan to have a two week break once a year fair enough hire but I think after three years we’ll be sitting on an asset probably worth our initial outlay with the way prices have been going and if not who cares we’re hooked 😄

We use ours on average twice a month , every month so hiring would not be viable for us .
Back to the original topic tho , pre France trip we culled the two kitchen “ cutlery “ drawers , was quite cathartic and liberating tbh !
I’m not sure I could give up my addiction to carrying a “spare one “ of nearly everything tho !

Totally depends on how much you use it. Perhaps you could give us a quote for three months hire so that we can compare.

When you start selling said "stuff" and putting the funds towards buying other essential "stuff"... :giggler:

Cheers

Then you run into the issues we found last year ;- hire is from Monday, music festivals end on a Monday so most hire firms wanted us to hire from the Monday of the week of the festival (which would start on a Thursday) until the Monday after the end of the festival! I tried negotiating with hire companies “I’ll get it back by noon.” “Sorry sir it must be returned by ten a.m. and if it’s dirty you will lose your £750 deposit!”😳😳😳

Rental is useful for the 'suck it and see' aspect and casual/occasional users but if it forms a major part of your leisure time rental is not going to be financialy viable or as spontaneous. The market is however plenty big enough from what I have seen for both owners and renters!

Don't let the management know you have upped the weight of your van.
They will want more things that you have always said we hadn't capacity for.

I always thought that you had enough stuff in the MH when the walls start bulging out and no matter how hard you try you can’t quite close the hab door.
You mean like this? It was one of our previous campers! In my defence it was stuffed to the roof with duvets from where I worked which had been donated to the Hull Greyhound Rescue charity that I'm involved with! :giggle:

In my van there is a plastic box at the bottom of the wardrobe. I understand it has things like teatowels, chopping boards, plastic glasses and other such stuff in there.

In the 5 years I've had my van I've never opened it. It was filled and placed in the wardrobe by my now ex. I am contemplating full timing and said plastic box shall be placed on her doorstep! You might think you need it, but you don't!

I do need that space for my stuff - including about 75 t-shirts from various races I ran over the last 30 years, which I don't need also but which I use in rotation and which I'm completely prepared to make space for over plastic wine glasses.

I think the key is 'priority' - what is important and where can you put it! I would never leave home without my toolkit for example!

Finally used a microwave steamer bowl this last trip, its been in the van for nearly 3 years has now had a use of 3mins to heat frozen creamed leeks.
