I didn't find the picture of the NC30 (Yet) but here are some of my other recent rides in no particular order:

I never owned one myself but loved riding CBX's of friends. They go for a lot of money on the classic scene
3 years ago I was in a bike shop in UK and saw a CBX1000 for sale at £12k.

I 'bought' it there and then. But when I checked, it wouldn't fit in my camper, so had to cancel.

I was gonna bring it back here, just to look at.

It's the only second hand bike I'd ever buy. Only ever bought new bikes for last 25 years.

I’m loving the CCM, was that a Suzuki 400cc single in it?

Only one of those left MOT’d in the UK now too.
Correct... DZR400 engine... went really well .. a 75 year old guy bought it off me and he rode it away in a gale force wind ... I think he made it home :rolleyes:

There are a lot of Honda 350/4's ex US floating around at the moment for OK money, has anyone been on one? I imagine they re a more pedestrian 400 4?

what was the base bike ?

It was a Honda K4 from 1972, I have patchy history

Back in the early seventies Yamaha had over the counter race bikes that were capable of winning Grand Prix. The 350 version (I'm restoring a similar one at the moment) won pretty much everything

As a result, if you were a less than average rider, but had the money you could buy a TZ Yamaha and win races

That left a big gap in racing for those without the funds. So, a new class of inexpensive racing was formulated based on the K4 Honda. As usual with any sort of racing, it got out of hand money wise pretty quickly

But, as a class it is still going strong in classic racing

My particular one was raced successfully at national level up to the mid nineties and then 'disappeared' for 11 years. It was purchased by the man I purchased it from who had it for a further 7 years. I bought it in 2013 and spent 6 months restoring it (with a lot of help from my friends)

Yep, but the 350 - the bike was designed as a 350 and scaled down to 250 for the European & UK market. That & it's variants were the best selling bikes in the US for many years

I’d guess it was from the CB250 family too.....but maybe the G5 due to the disk, but then again the forks don’t look like they’ve always lived there either, unless the the calliper has moved for a bigger disk.

I'm catching up here!

In order to get registered as a classic race bike, it has to use what is in period

So the front forks actually came from the CB350/4 - Honda did not import them into the UK (although 6 were sold by Read Titan in Leytonstone, cos my mate George bought one). The honda G5 used the same forks as the CB350/4 in 1975 - and also the CB400/4 which was imported to the UK and sold well


The front brake is a AP racing adjustable master cylinder with AP racing caliper. They were around in the time & the road version was used on later Triumphs & Nortons

The bike sports Amal carbs, as the original Honda CV carbs were not good for top end power (you can now use Mikunis)

Electrics were Motoplat - but we can now use anything, so I fitted an Electrex self generating ignition

Designed for the US market they and never officially imported to the uk (see my previous post)

I rode one from kent to Oulton Park & back on an Easter BH for the transatlantic trophy many years ago

It was a nice bike in its day, superceded by the CB400/4 which was sold in Europe & the states. It was quite heavy but handled well and the engine was super smooth (for its day)

Some parts are interchangeable with the 400, but those that aren't are expensive

I prefer the look of the 350 - especially the 4 exhausts

If you fancy one, I would say go for it - but as with any classic bike, be prepared to spend money on it (or maybe I should have said 'lavish money on it"!)

I bought a 250 K4 new.. run it in and tore the engine down and had it bored out to 325 .. The piston kit was supplied by the lads at Leytonstone

Read Titan were always coming up with good stuff back in the day

The race engines are taken out to 66mm bore making them nearer to the full 350cc (the original Honda 350 was in fact 325cc - 64mm bore)

In the early days, Kawasaki Z750 (4 cyl) pistons were used - they fit straight in, but you then need to re-work the head, otherwise the piston would hit it (on most you have to put an extra spark plug washer on, to stop the piston hitting it)

Nowadays, there are forged pistons made just for the race bikes £280, along with titanium valve springs at 240 notes a set

With an engine refresh every season, the 'cheap racing' formula hasn't worked

But oh what fun?

I love the modern machines and all the new developments that come with each next generation but I’m fascinated by classic machinery and the massive knowledge that goes with them.....

I wonder if the knowledge will still be there with future classics with all the electronics or will the enthusiasts just be saying years ago I had one of them and plugged it into the laptop to improve performance.

And yes, that IS an alarm clock and it is a transistor radio bolted to the handlebars !
Blowed if I can remember what that is on the petrol cap
Looking at the reg the bike was only 2 years old
