Beginners, got Doggy the van - March 2014
As France destroyed our 9 months of touring in Europe, we are looking for plan B, has anyone took a ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta (1h sail) and drove to Morocco (the only ferry to get to Morocco from Spain)?

Whaaat? Are you telling me that Spain, the same Spain that moans about us brits owning a bit of the Iberian peninsula owns a bit of Africa?
I mean, come on. Isn’t that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black? 😂😂😂😱😱😱.

I'm guessing there is something to stop you doing that.

I was reading in another thread about a van normally resident in Spain driving to Sete in France to then get the ferry to Morocco (that was before all French/Morocco ferries were stopped a couple of weeks ago)

We can’t go to France as from 18/12

Yes there is something stopping you. The relations between spain & Morocco over the western saharan leader benig treated in hospital here means the borders are basically shut. Freight is the only thing crossing the straights at the moment & they won't let you in via Cueta or Melilla to my knowledge.
France was the only way in until they stopped it last week.

I cannot recommend Ceuta, I always used this route but in 2017 the hassle and masses of migrants were the last straw, mobbed & threatened. Tangier Med is easier and more secure but as above, you might have a bit of wait before Morocco allows/opens to tourism from Spain

how about getting a ferry from Hull into Europe and staying to the north or travel eastuntil things calm down then you may be able to head south in Late Jan or Feb. Take a look at Gadget Man on Utube, they have done Rumania and now in Bulgaria and it looks great.

That's sad to hear. I went through Ceuta to Morocco in 2007 - lots of would be's but no hassle and a good entry as you arrive 2 hours earlier. So into Morocco at 7am.
Be a great shame if Morocco goes off line - "it's the nearest far away place you can go". I loved it - especially Fez.

Years ago (1970s.early 80s) there was a direct ferry between Almeria and Melilla and during fiesta week in A (August) not only were there bullfights in the bullring behind the market hall, but down on the coast ( sort of between the port and the old prison) was the annual feria when there was a large influx of Marocs. I have no further info except that a commonly heard expression at that time was, 'Es malo - es Maroc!' Was not necessary to delve any deeper into that, just to change the way you carried your shoulderbag to across body .....

Looks like we all need to take a big step back, rethink how we live our lives, take our holidays and then get on with it....nothing is going to change for a long, long time......we all should be a little more relaxed, contented and enjoy what we have, not getting upset thinking what we have lost, what we cannot do, cannot go...Chill, and Merry Christmas everyone. :xangry:

The morrocan Kings intransigence about Spain really does beg the question about all those who served the winter tourist industry are going to survive? Marie Antionette reincarnate perhaps?

I might be able to muster up some of that if I didn't have an English winter to get through. :cold:🌨️

Ceuta is a horrendous border crossing now, thousands of migrants attempting to get into Spain, as has already been said Tangier Med is much more civilised and migrant free plus you can buy phone Sims and exchange money there, Ceuta has lost those facilities.

Loved Fez. I bought a leather briefcase from the tannery 10 years ago and it still smells of that place. I leave in the garage but sniff it occasionally.

Me too, 2004, 05, 07, 15, 16 but exiting spring 17 was lairy. I loved the chance to fuel up & top up the booze VAT free then choose my time to go to frontier, park up by the sea wall & watch the queue.

I survived 48 UK winters...then the penny dropped....been in Eurozone since....I do miss scraping the car windows, walking in various mountain locations with the crunch below my feet....climbing gullies and ridges in the Highlands....but I can live with it...we made our decisions....20°c December days play havoc with my skin...but we have to take the rough with the smooth...🧑‍🎄🧑‍🎄😀🥴😁

I do like having different seasons. I would find it incredibly boring having the same weather day after day. I like the cold and frosty days. I like the misty mornings and the lovely spring new growth of flora and fauna.
Nah, you can keep the same weather everyday.

There still was 4/5 years ago - I took it on a motorbike, it was an overnight service. Very good. Melilla into Morocco/Nador is a bit interesting!! 😅

Can only comment about the return journey when we "escaped" in March 2020 - literally the last ferry out of Ceuta (which they held for us when we got to check-in) to Algeciras. The couple behind us didn't make it........... It was very slow through the Morocco/Spain border (for those who don't know Ceuta is actually on the Moroccan mainland) but all the Spanish seemed interested in was the dog's paperwork!

You, and we, are slightly better off in that you have Spain and access to France and beyond, and we can travel extensively in Easter Europe and have been down to Greece this year just on vaccination certificates and as far as I know still can, because there are no border closures within EU, at least not for EU Citizens and Residents.

3 friends of mine had a Morocco trip organised for last month, rode to the ferry, bought tickets, boarded and sailed to Ceuta…. Arrived and had to come straight back since Spain had closed the border-the people in the ferry ticket office didn’t mention that the border was closed, and neither did the Foreign Office website….it was a lad on a moped in Ceuta who told them they weren’t going anywhere. To say they were pissed off was an understatement-they spent 4 days riding in Portugal then back to the airport car park at Malaga, loaded the bikes back into the van and came home……..

France "destroyed 9 months touring"? Lost me with that one. That said, it does look like wherever there is a Europe to Africa ferry route, the African side is going to involve running a gauntlet of desperate people trying to get away from famine and strife.
