Few years now
We are due to move home soon and due to slow BT speeds would be restricted to using Virgin for broadband.
Sitting on a site at present where i have 60mbs download on my iphone, which is more than sufficient for my needs. This got me thinking whether a 4g mifi would work as a home system. Anyone doing this at present and if so any recommendations for the hardware?
Thanks Howard

A friend lives in a new housing estate. It's got terrible internet. He's works remotely. He's got 4 teenage kids. They switched to a 4G home router and got a massive improvement.

Don't use one of the dinky battery powered units. They have poor WiFi that won't cover a house very well. Get a mains powered one.

The mifi would probably not give you good coverage throughout your house, as they’re designed for short-range coverage.

I was thinking of something like a Teltonika RUT 590 or similar with external aerial.

If you are in the middle of nowhere and a long way from the tower, an external aerial can help. But if the signal is reasonable, it'll make no difference.

I have been using a Huawei 593-u12 for years now. They are pretty cheap off ebay (2nd hand) but are cracking good bits of kit.

I bought it because it has 4 ethernet ports and external antenna ports. It also runs off 12v so you can plug it into a cigarette lighter in your van (leisure side).

A good choice too! (y)

In the ‘van we’re using a B535 and Smarty unlimited data SIM (£18p/m) and a Poynting XPOL-2-5G antenna (if required).

My BT broadband contract has just ended so in the house I'm now using a Teltonika RUT950 with a Vodafone unlimited data sim and I'm pleased with the download speed and WiFi coverage.

Ideal, then use a mesh system to distribute the wifi throughout the house.

Netgear M2 !!

Gone for the ‘cheap’ option then…..!?!o_O;)
Actually it was. It was £150 from EE with a 12 month contract I think ( it was a couple of years ago) and they unlocked it after 6 months. I don't think they offered it for long though, I wonder why ...? :giggle: - at the time the M2 was around £900 to buy, so I got VERY lucky ! (But there's always someone with a better deal who will trump my deal !!)

I just use a cheapo Chinese repeater from my Huawei E5577C and get good enough coverage around a 4 bed detached house with the motorhome parked in the garden. Don't need a landline anymore

We run a Huawei router and omnidirectional aerial with Vodafone Unlimited max at home in conjunction with a TP link ap1200 mesh system at home.

In the van we run the same with Tesco Unlimited excluding the mesh.

As we now have Unlimited sims in our phones, I'm thinking of changing and installing two "signal boosters", one in the house and one in the van, this would allow us to drop two sims.

Something like this...

Cheers

In house we now use a TP-link with external antenna. Can also be used in van with the usual short aerials . it has 4 ethernet ports for plug in + wifi. Quite common here. I have a Yoigo unlimited data sim.
I also use a huawei on occasions plugged in permanently.

I have a Tp link at my static, 200GB a month for £21 set up an out door aerial as I believe a caravan can act like a faraday cage ? I get a good signal, sky box, smart tv, iPhone, iPad, and lap top all logged on to it, obviously I’m not here all the time but at least half of each month, never come near to using up my monthly allowance.

Forgot, there is also the fire stick and iPod logged in as well.
