The ABS and ESP lights on dash, will no go off which is resulting in vehicle running in limp mode. Specialist Mercedes garage
is having problems. Seems I might need new CPU.
Has anyone had any experience of this happening. Thankyou

I had this on my MB diesel Smart and I think it is the same sensor, it was under the passenger seat, I took it off an shook it up, the little hairy microswitches get tangled up an need a stir up, it was fine after that. MB garage and specialisr workshops didn't find it. I found it when it went off safe mode ,pulling away on left corners then coming back a few moment later in a straight line. You do not say which merc but the sensors tend to be the same. It might be worth ago, I do not know where it is on whatever you have. I have not had problem since.

You don’t need a CPU - it will be the ABS speed sensors. I’m guessing you cannot engage cruise control or speed limiter.

Have replaced all 4 on my sprinter based MH. Have replaced on my Mercedes SLK and a friends SLK also needed same yesterday.

Rubbish design/build somewhere and Mercedes deny there is a problem

Ps if you’ve suffered limp mode (Oh matron!) the fault will be on a driving wheel (rear if RWD, front if FWD) - I can’t tell you which side! But it is better to replace both sides at the same time.

I would add I am no truck mechanic but have had too much experience with ABS sensor failure.

M_B Forums, also seem to point finger at ABS sensors as first thing to checkout. If you have an issue with the Switch under the seat. That is more and SRS issue?.

I had SRS light come on when I had to take seat(s) out. Needed re-setting. M-B wanted £100+Vat to re-set. I got a OBI reader on Line for £80. and reset the lights. So now effectively "free".

Forgot to mention the the MB speed sensor rings on the axle rust and the ring splits breaking the continuity of the ring itself, only need one to go and it will trigger SAFE mode. Easy to check with a torch .

My Mercedes based Chrysler 300 had the same fault. I replaced a speed sensor on one rear wheel and a few weeks later a tone ring fell apart.
Sensor was around £25, tone rings £40 pair. If one had rotted the other wouldn't be far behind so replaced both.
If the Merc garage forgot about their beloved computer diagnostics and used an Oscilloscope instead it would confirm the ring was good or bad.

I can recommend buying an Icarsoft reader for the Mercedes range, works with all models from the Smart Cars to the Sprinter with the OBD2 inlet, the earlier Sprinter needs an adapter which is available on E-Bay for a few quid.
I've had quite a few Merc's so buying the reader was a no brainer & it paid for itself first time out of the box.

Cheap OBD readers are ok but, the icarsoft tells you exactly where the problem is. There's nothing to be scared of, very easy bit of kit to use.

I have an icarsoft and it is a pain to use as they give no instruction book to lead you through the system and give a clue as to follow the system. follow your nose but not intuitive.

We had this on our Auto Sleeper Northants automatic not long after purchase, turned out the brake light switch needed replacing, not a big job and also the earth wire from the Yaw sensor to the fuse box also needed replacing. The brake light switch was about £80 replaced the earth wire was £420!!!! but all labour. I did find lots of reports of the brake light switch being the problem, but noting for the earth wire. Do a google search with "mercedes sprinter brake light switch" there's lots of info on the faults it causes.

Was this on the Sprintshift gearbox? I'm just curious.

I have the I-carsoft i980. Which does for Sprinter, It reset my SRS when I had reason to remove the seats. It does take a bit of getting used to.
