I have iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core2 Duo o.s. 10.9.5. iPhoto 8.1.2
MacBook 2.0GHz. Ditto. Ditto. o.s. 10.6.8. iPhoto 8.1

Maybe it’s nearing time to buy a new MacBook?

I use both for photo archiving and simple photo manipulation, sufficient to paint pics I take on holiday etc.

My MacBook still works with iPhoto, but iMac doesn’t.
I’m guessing that os and software versions together with hardware age makes one work and not the other.
Is any Mac user out there using anything other than iPhoto? I’m not looking for Photoshop or similar, once tried Aperture, but not a choice anymore.
I could just go with a current MacBook and current free photo app.
Any opinions?
Cheers

Macbook Pro, 15" Retina, 16Gb, 2.7Ghz i7, MacOS 10.14.13.

Adobe Lightroom 6.14 (not cloud/subscription based) for cataloging/organisation and the wonderful Affinity Photo for image manipulation. As the version of LR I have is no longer maintained I'll be ditching it when something else comes along .....

Never got on with the Apple photo apps.

Are you using the iPhoto or the newer Photos app?

Hi Mark, as both macs are old now I’m using iPhoto 8.1.2 and 8.1.
MacBook is ok but iMac ”beachball” . Plenty of RAM and hard drive space.

I use Lightroom previously I used Aperture, which I preferrred most of the time.
Never got on with the new Photos app.
I can recommend Lightroom, it can be as easy or complicated as you want it to be.

How old are your iMac and MacBooks? I use a 2012 Macbook pro, but speeded it up a lot with a 1tb ssd hard drive. Latest version of Lightroom 6.14 that still seems to work well.

Hi
I have a iMac 2009 Model Identifier: iMac11,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i5. Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4
Fitted an SSD and currently running macOS 10.13.6 and running iPhoto 9.6.1 quite happily.
I know sharing iPhoto libraries across different versions of OS can cause some fun and games - maybe try a clean iPhoto library on the iMac and do some test imports to check the app is working. (hold down option key when launching iPhoto)
Not sure how helpful that is!!

I think I’ll leave my MacBook as it is; after all, it’s still working nicely!

I think I’ll maybe try to upgrade the iMac to 10.11.x, nothing to lose!
But that will be the final try.
I think I need to try “photo” on one of the kids new macs, then I’ll have a better idea of how suitable it is for the future.
As I said, These days I just take photos for source material for paintings.
I suppose I could be persuaded to buy a bridge camera, but I don’t really have time to take up photography as an art form. I spend enough on painting!
Thanks for opinions.
