Never had that happen in a UK self service garage. Always filled up myself and just paid at the till.

Not at this location but I've filled up without any supervsion at multiple UK locations, why do you say they "have to be manned"?

Yes, for the minority if you do not know what to do ask but, the pumps are pretty much idiot proof, though evolution will create a better idiot,
they are intended to be self service.

Don't think it's the actual pumps that need manning. .but the station itself so they can be isolated. They check through the window etc for people refilling bottles and the like before the activate the pump

In the UK the till was "manned", but the LPG pump was not.

Coincidentally, my two last fill ups have been at an Intermarche filling station off the A63 in France at about noon and at the Auchun filling station in Dieppe at about 9pm. In both cases I prepaid by card and neither the till nor the pump was manned.

The only ‘manned’ pump that Im aware of in the UK is the one at Gaslow where they serve you. I’m also not aware of any ‘pay at pump’ LPG outlets so, in practice, all LPG stations have to be manned to allow the dispensing of LPG irrespective of what any legislative requirements might be.

The place in Ullapool is also manned, and they come out and serve you...
