Hi
A Polish friend had an lpg conversion to his British car fitted in Poland, properly certified over there.

His UK insurance co won't accept the Polish certificate.

Can he get it checked/certified here?

Any sugestions gratefully received.

I found this Googling. may be helpful..

What do I do if I do not have a LPG Conversion Certificate?

If your vehicle was converted by the vehicle manufacturer and this is shown in the model details (e.g. Bi-fuel, dual fuel or LPG) then send in a copy of page 2 of your V5 to obtain free entry on to the Vehicle Register. Please note this is only applicable if your car is a factory fitted LPG conversion. Regular conversions require a certificate for register entry (See "How do I get my car onto the Vehicle Register?")

If your vehicle was not converted by the vehicle manufacturer then it is still possible to get your vehicle onto the Vehicle Register - you simply need to take your vehicle to one of our UKLPG Approved Autogas Installers who will inspect the conversion and if satisfactory arrange for it to be added to the Register.

Click here to find your nearest UKLPG Approved Autogas Installer who can give you a quote for the cost.

Please note that inclusion of LPG, Gas or Bi-Fuel on the V5 as the 'Type of Fuel' only means that the DVLA has accepted your vehicle for the Alternative Fuel Discount and is not a certification of conversion standards.

I think your problem may be finding one who is willing to sign off someone else's work. I'm on my 2nd converted car, I always use Mobile automotives and LPG - http://www.mobileautomotivesandlpg.co.uk/ - a 1 man business, he's excellent, although servicing is his mainstay he does do some conversions and is fully registered to do so.

If he would want to sign off someone else's work or not I don't know - what I do know is there is no way he will sign it off if it's at all suspect, Edward is very professional and safety conscious - which in turn could cause a problem with your friend if he feels it's OK. What Edward will do is service it and tell your friend if there are any safety problems.

I would add though I've never been asked for the conversion certificate by my insurance company - cars have been insured by Tesco and Admiral - so your friend may want to try a different insurer.

Thanks @scotjimland @Feltwell and @pappajohn

I passed on you info and this was the reply from my friend, might help others, thanks again(y)

Thanks, I rang a place in Nottingham he said they’d usually do it but the pit they use for LPG with gas sensors etc. is out of order at the moment, and he said they only charge about £50! He said he’s done loads, even if people have fitted it themselves - as long as it passes all the tests and meets the regulations anyone should give a certificate - he said it’s not signing off their work as his, just saying it meets the testing requirements etc. But for most places £50 probably isn’t worth the hassle.

The other problem is there’s not many LPG installers/servicers around either, the one in Ripley isn’t interested and there’s 2 in Stoke - tried both a couple times yesterday and no answer. So probably best to look for another insurer. The guy yesterday said to definitely tell them its dual fuel though otherwise you’re not insured.

Gastec, Rochford near Southend-On-Sea.

I had my lpg installed in my previous camper van (Autosleeper Talbot Express) some years ago but the installer was not able to register it.

I found the above installer who was willing to inspect and register my van although it cost me £200 as he also carried out a small amount of work (he felt it necessary to add a strengthening bar to the assembly).

This might be too far away for your friend but if he is desperate it might be worth asking.

Good luck,

Conal
