On aire in france heard loud bang smoke comeing from a franka motorhome. Pompeirs (firemen) full breathing kit on arrived removed what looked like a lithium power pack then buried it in the sand uncoverd it every 30min to check temperature it was 2 hrs before they took it away the owner of the van was tacken to hospital as he had tried to remove it himself.

Boeing had some trouble too on a new plane I remember. Might have been Dreamliner 🤔

We were moored in Poole harbour a few years ago. Loud band. Emergency services everywhere. Turns out a bloke two boats behind had used a shotgun on himself👎👎👎

Lithium can be dangerous.... Remember when phone batteries were a problem.

The Lithium batteries (LiFePO4) in motorhomes are not the same as the lithium batteries (Li-Poly) used in mobile phones. Li-Poly are volatile and can burn rapidly when punctured.

However, all high power batteries are dangerous, even Lead Acid in the event of a dead short. They store huge amounts of energy, which can be released in short order, causing explosions and fire if mishandled. It sounds like he might have tried to remove the battery whilst not knowing what he was doing and, unfortunately, the BMS failed to protect against shorting, or had an external BMS, or was a lead acid that has no BMS.

The bang and smoke came first then he tried to remove it

John, thats a bit like saying..... Cars can be dangerous, remember that plane crash

While cars and planes are both transport, they are different. Same for LiFePO4 and those phone batteries, they are both batteries, but

LiFePO4 will burn, but even if punctured, shorted and hit with flame throwers, they are hard to set alight, you can get a slow burn (plastic casing) but certainly no violent combustion or explosion.

EDIT

I see what you are saying John, Yes it could be a lithium battery bank or similar. And yes they can go bang.

Thats a bit of a worry with lithium power packs as a few people are using these as they are cheaper than a LiFePO4 install BUT many of these and specifically the cheaper ones are Li-Po or Li-ion so not as safe.

You mean like a mobile phone charging pack? Or a leisure battery?
