Newhaven to Dieppe Thursday 16/9 £120.50 for 6m M/Home + Bike Rack and that's before 20% Discount for having at least 1 person in Party who is aged 60+. So £96 net cost, but has to be booked by phone [0800 917 1201] rather than online.

That’s gone up. We’re crossing via the tunnel tonight. £123.00 which is around normal. Similar price coming back. £120.00. I don’t know why it’s suddenly very expensive. Seems a bit strange.

I believe that Euro tunnel has horrendous debt, they recently had to borrow even more to stay afloat.

Just checked and it is still cheaper for us to chunnel it ( though only just )
Ferries used to be way cheaper but they got greedy about 4 or 5 years ago .. at least as far as we are concerned.

& they wonder why it is empty.

They have always had horrendos debt from the very outset. It was only just before the pandemic they scammed another "10 for 1" share offer to invent an imaginary profit, the 1st since it opened. That is also why they break down, have a lack of air con, & the wheels are square as there has been no investment or replacment of the rolling stock

Looking at Dieppe to Newhaven Ferry for return around 6th February and overnight sailing is £75 with 20% discount for us oldies reducing the price to £60. 4 hours sleeping/dozing on comfortable reclining seat and a decent early morning arrival to get clear of M23/M25 before full rush hour for the first leg back to Scotland!

I worked both on ferries and with the management of a ferry company for 15 years, crossing the channel the Shuttle is my preferred option for convenience more than anything. Not surprising since I have probably made over 5,000 ferry trips in my time.

Mmmm. Save £200 and have the wife suffer sea sickness twice, or spend the £200 have a shorter trip, and a happy wife.

I’d spend the £200 thanks.
OR, save £200, wait for Hughie's call, and be on hand with a box of tissues, so still £198 up on the deal. Mrs LA likely to be feeling too ill to lambast you, pay for the dry cleaning when back home and win some brownie points as the knight in puked on armour ...

BTW, I'm on my 2nd marriage ...

We used to time arrival so that we could park in the Town Centre Car Park for free [after 6pm IIRC] in the Caravan days. Then nip through the alleyway to Horace's Fish Bar [operated by Dave who would fill our flask with boiling water for the 5am CET coffee at Dieppe Ferry Port] for 2 x Pensioner Specials [but then we switched to fish, not as gristly ...] and then pootle into the Ferry Port.

But then we graduated to Sainsburys Café, combining it with a Diesel refill and a quick scoot round the supermarket to grab rolls, fruit loaf etc to stave off hunger until we reached a boulangerie en France

Never considered the Dieppe route as Woman REALLY dislikes boats, but if I could get away with it t would be about £75 cheaper including savings on diesel which would be about £25

I think we are now going to use the ferry both ways P&O Dover Calais out and Dieppe Newhaven back.
At the times we want to travel the Tunnel was £175 after discounts compared to P&O at £80, the Dieppe one is £96.

Is the £96 net, Lenny, with the gross cost at £120.50? The reduced mileage compared to driving from Calais would just about cover the extra cost v. the Calais option [unless you are driving east!]

Yes £120 - 20%, going out via Calais as going to our dealer in Belgium for damp check before heading south & Mi's brother and Mum are only 35/45 min from Tunnel/Dover.

If going directly south no competition for Newhaven saves up to 400 miles on a round trip & only £30 dearer for a return, and Newhaven is only 20 miles from home.

I lived in Worthing until 1999 and only really appreciated the benefit of Portsmouth, Newhaven and Dover when it came time to leave! The consolation [ignoring quality of life!] is that travelling from Scotland, it doesn't really matter which Ferry Port we choose, they're all within the 500-510 miles each way bracket, so it's down to times of crossing and ease of approach, and Newhaven is like a favourite pair of slippers!
