Hi all, as anyone driven the route from Bordeaux to Benidorm through Zaragoza, is it a good road and which is best as it would appear there are some options, stick to the coast or go more direct? Also are there any good places to stay on route?

Hi Tony can't give you feedback on the route but if you plan to park up in Zaragoza it may be best to book the only campsite they have unless you are a bonifide wilder. We went there last month and the site was fully booked... sheesh. So we then went to Huesca, free aire right in the town and it was great. Enjoy your travels

The N121A at the border and down to Pamplona is a great route to use. We always short cut Zaragoza by leaving the A68 after Tudela, onto the N122 to Magellon, on to Almunia de Dona Godina and Carinena, where we pick up the A68 again, staying at the Aire at Carinena or Dinopolis on the outskirts of Teruel.
Also consider the autoroute service road South of Bordeaux to avoid the tolls which are penal for a heavy van! Details of this workaround are on the MHF website.

I come down the N10 to Bordeaux I go left around the ring round, N230, which becomes the A63 & off downA62 for a short distance until the peage where I exit on to the D1113 to Langon then down the N524 all the way to Capiteux where it becomes the D932 & on to Roquefort where it becomes the D934 all the way to Aire -sur-L Ádour where it changes to D834 & follow this all the way to Pau & go around, on to the N134 to Oloron.St.-Marie & continue on all the way down & through the Som Port tunnel where the road becomes the E7 to Jaca, on to Huesca via Sabiñanigo, & down to Zaragoza. I then use the A23 across to Sagunt & down around Valencia. I come around the bypass heading to Alicante & come inland so you'd have to continue another way.

Guys, thank you so much for your support, I have downloaded Tonka's route to Spain and will try and use this where possible. Hagstrom, I am assuming that the "autoroute service road South of Bordeaux to avoid the tolls" is in this and will provide guidance. I will also use your recommendations for missing Zaragoza.

We are heading from Santander on 15th October , if ferry gets in on time at lunchtime we are hoping to whiz on down to Teruel as there's a free aire by the Police station or at Dinopolis, another of Steve @tonka recommendations, although I'm not sure if anyone has used it recently. We have stayed at the campsite in Zaragoza a number of times in October/November/December and although busy it's not been full. It's quite dear and although it's clean the loos are a bit utilitarian. Now that we're braver we don't bother with it for a stop over. I do miss the cake shop over the road!
When are you going?

Logrono is the place to head. 60 bars within a 200m area selling different tapas.

"There are over 50 taperías (tapas restaurants) located within a four-block area near the town center. The traditional tapas restaurants often serve only one tapa [such as seta (mushroom), served as pincho - pintxo in Basque - meaning one serving, or media ración ("half portion"), a small plate of tapas], but offer the Rioja D.O.."

Good wine and good food. Head for the tourist information and they have a booklet showing which bars specialise in particular dishes

Free parking a 15 min walk from centre of town. Dump facilities etc a further half mile out of town.

We are planning to head to Calais Thursday night and I pan to be in Bordeaux Friday before heading to the south of Zaragoza Saturday and then arrive Benidorm sometime on Saturday. Times and locations may vary depending on wine consumption and tiredness.

Safe travels, I think lots of people have stayed at the Carinena stop as well, we used Steve's route as have many others although I don't like to give @tonka too much praise as he is a terrible sexist who thinks ladies only like knitting and reading Barbara Cartland.

@Tony Wilson don't underestimate the distance and judge it by how you feel on the day. One thing a lot don't realise is no cats eyes on French roads and that makes driving in the dark a bit harder. Safe trip.

A long way in a short time....were in St Justin on a little campsite €15 a night south and west of Bordeaux. We came up from Spain through Pamplona where there is an excellent Aire with services for €10 and a 15 minute walk into beautiful Pamplona. We stoppend an an Aire in Roncesvalles on the Camino de Compestello trail behind the church only a couple of restaurants in the village and a monastary excellent food in the restaurants and a lovely little village with lots of pilgrims stopping there to eat and stay thee night....only 17km into France on a very pretty road. Happy travels don't be in too much of a rush you will miss so much if you do :)(y)
