Just sorting this out and have my medical tonight. A bit concerned that it appears I have to send my old photo licence with the application form. What happens if I am stopped whilst driving and cannot produce this.

Whoever stops you will check with DVLA.

A friend of mine belatedly sent his licence off for exchange from paper to photo, it came back with some entitlements missing and the DVLA were having none of it unless he could prove the authority for those ones. Without a photocopy it’s difficult to locate proof of a motorcycle test taken 40+ years ago!

Copy all the paperwork you send and send it signed for mail ,so at least you know they have received it .sent mine off in August ,licence expired October and still waiting for DVLA..

I've never sent off my driving licence. They ask you to return it when your new one arrives.
With theft from post at an all time high it's best to hang on to it.

Not for the C1,they request you return it with the renewal application hence people taking a copy of licence.

Copy everything you send them. and a record of any phone calls.
As long as your application is in their system you can drive your own vehicles in the UK, under section 88 of the Road Traffic Act.
However not outside UK and not for reward, i.e work purposes, as i have found out to my cost
