I'm planning a trip down to London back end of the year, want at least three nights, and by the time you look at hotel price's, plus train price's, it's probably cheaper to drive the van down and book a site, plus can probably do 5 nights at a site for less than cost as 3 at a hotel, even taking fuel costs into account.

Looked at Abbey Wood CAMC site, looks easy enough to jump on the tube and get into London for what we want to do, but then I've started looking into 'lez' zones which this site is within, and my van, a 2009 Ducato is payable.

Now, I'd presumed that I'd pay as I drove to the site passing into the zone, park up for the 5 day's or whatever, then pay again to drive out, but I've just been talking to a colleague who has told me it's a daily charge for the duration of time that the vehicle is within the zone, so £15 daily whilst it's parked up doing nothing except provide sleeping quarters for us.

So, which is it, and do I have to start replanning my trip?

I too thought it was just days of use in lez, but no experience of it.
I'm sure others will be along soon to clarify

This has been discussed many times here in past but those in the know assures us you only pay on the days you drive in and then back out.
Indeed I raised the same question a while back👍👍👍👍

We left Abbey Wood on Monday, fortunately our moho is LEZ exempt but I'm sure you will only pay for the days you use the vehicle in the zone.
However, the site is excellent and we were very grateful for the extensive shade provided by the many mature trees.
The station is a 10 minute walk away and the new Elizabeth Line runs strait into town every 5 minutes.
Instead of taking the train all the way we just went one stop to Woolwich and took the Uber Boat straight to the London Eye at half price with our bus passes. (£17.40 return for 2)

Thank you for the review, I've read quite a few positive comments about the site, especially now that it is served by the Elizabeth line, and the boat ride sounds an excellent way to get into London

£10 per person was the maximum we used on our oyster card per day last week with trains and underground. Abbey wood is a great spot to visit London although we never used the Elizabeth line just the normal trains.

You only pay when you move a vehicle within the zone. You don’t pay ULEZ charge just to park!! (Thank the lord)
Go on TFL site and check your Vehicle and costs.

You would pay twice, but at £100 per day. You could also consider sites outside the LEZ, such as Chertsey. However, train costs will be higher, as you'll be "outside the zones". Henley on Thames is another good one, a pleasant walk to the station and by the river, although further out still.

£100!

I thought it was £15 charge?

Never thought of Henley, we spent a couple of days there last year and was a very pleasant location

This site might help. In particular, it says, "LEZ charges do not apply to vehicles when they're parked within the zone and not driving." I think they actually mean ".....and not being driven" but you get the drift :)

No wonder it's so difficult!

It's very confusing. Heavy vehicles sub Euro 6 pay the LEZ at £100. Light vehicles instead pay £12.50 for the ULEZ. Then there's the congestion charge, which is not the same as either. That is an additional £15, but doesn't apply at night, and only in the smaller ULEZ area.

Smaller motorhomes might only come under the ULEZ, but you'd need to check if it counted as light.

Abbey Wood is outside the ULEZ but within the LEZ and I assumed you had a heavy motorhome as you thought you'd be caught by it.

Stick your registration into the tfl site and see which zones you are caught by and the daily rate. If it says ULEZ chargable, but LEZ exempt, it should be free to get to Abbey Wood, but check the routing, as your sat nav might send you sailing straight through the middle.

I'd checked the tfl site earlier, I'm a 2009 3500kgs ducato and this is what it says

Abbey Wood is within the LEZ zone, but outside of the ULEZ zone, so I thought the congestion charge at £15 was the LEZ charge

That is saying it is completely free for you. Just don't within the ULEZ, or it will be very expensive! Plot your route carefully.

Been to Abbey Wood many times from M25 Dartford, no charges for 3.5t 2012

So with a bit of careful route planning you should be able to visit Abbey Wood without making a donation to Mayor Kahn’s glee fund.

Well it might be difficult to avoid the Dart Charge depending on where you're coming from.

I do like how they achieved their promise to remove the toll by renaming it a charge. That made it OK.

Every time this subject is aired I get VERY confused. cmcardle75 You say don't venture into ULEZ as this will get very expensive.. however Website quoted by OP says his vehicle is only £12.50.

Yes, it's all very confusing, but I think I'm either free, or at least no more than £15

Plus £15 for congestion charge, depending on the time of day.

£15 congestion charge for the RV, no cost for lez or ulez, didn't think I could go in the ulez free but says I can. 8.1L petrol/lpg

So is the congestion charge zone the same area as the ULEZ? So if you go into the ULEZ you automatically also enter the congestion charge zone.
As I said this us very confusing 🤕🤕🤕

It is the same zone. You'd need to pay both charges, depending on the time of day. Best just to avoid going into the zone! I very much doubt the £27.50, plus the several hours of your time trying to work out how to pay would be worth the 5 minute saving.

you can have a much older petrol and comply
ive just checked on a map and abbey wood is in the lez but not in the ulez or congestion charge area its 12.50 a day for a non compliant diesel not exceeding 3.5 tonnes

congestion charge is only for a small area in the center so not applicable to abbey wood

Yes, we've determined that the ULEZ and CC don't apply to Abbey Wood. We're just discussing the additional charges if you take the wrong route. One thing, though, was that I thought the ULEZ and CC zones were the same. It does seem that the CC zone never did expand, so is still quite small, as you say. Unless I've got an old map...

So are you now saying it is indeed possible to enter ULEZ but not necessarily into CC zone unless you go right into the center of London.?
