HI all

We want to leave the van at a friends house in France for a couple of months over summer, any pitfalls ?

My insurance policy precludes me from leaving the van unattended by me for longer then 48 hours without prior approval, except of course if it's being repaired at a garage. It is a full-time policy though.

I think insurance might be the challenge, I may need to find some supplementary top up. Any recomendations?

Check out how long the vehicle can be in the country before it has to be registered there
After B****t , i think they are now clamping down on things like this

Thanks,
I believe its 6 months until you need a cart gris, french equivalent of v5.
I think my insurance will be the challenge as I will want to leave the van unoccupied.

You're correct. It's explained here :)

We did this for a fortnight.
We had a cunning plan that if anything happened to the van, our friend would call us, one of us would fly out there and then report it.
The van was parked inside the grounds of a lovely house and there was little to no chance of anything happening to it.

We were then informed that Burglaries in the area had increased dramatically, causing some angst, until the facts came through that they had doubled to 4 in the past 10 years as a local couple had committed 2 burglaries recently and had been caught. We felt it was fairly safe under those circumstances.

We were aware of the insurance issue

Well risk assessed, there's always some but that sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Update- I was being pessimistic re Insurance, we are covered to leave the van in France as per statement from insurers.

"Your policy automatically covers you to take your vehicle away for up to 60 days in Europe.
We would need to endorse your policy to add an extra 30 days cover on to your policy towards the end of the 60 day period."

That suits us!

Thanks for everyone's input.

With respect, that statement just states how long you are covered for it says nothing about leaving it at a friend's house, you need to ask the specific question or else you risk finding out you're not covered if the worst happens.

Hi Chris

There was more to that quote, that was just the highlights. The insurers do know where it will be.

Thanks though.
