Says it all above
We have moved to a bungalow with old heating all as built in 1988

Boiler on its last legs
Radiators not far behind system is sluggish

Thought in for a penny in for a pound
Get a price for a new system
Strip and bin the old one

Had a bit of a shock
All the bits comes to about £1750

Then clicking through a few forums
It seems if I install it no warranty
Illegal for me to connect to the gas meter

Quote from installer £5000

Bit of a quondry for me I just hate being told you can't do that
And I'll choke paying someone else to do it for me

Was thinking boiler change route the run a new radiator circuitDon't think the saving will be worth it

I am just so wound up haven't the heart to tell Mrs t yet
Just seems crazy
Worked on gas for 43 years now I cant
Forget the competent part seems you need to register it
With co readings machine
which I no longer have

And moving I'm out of touch by distance for friends to assist

Double bummer
:crying::crying::crying::Eeek:

You can install all the plumbing -new rads etc and then just have a new boiler installed by a gas registered company for about £2k. Have you also considered the Green deal new boiler scheme -if you are on any benefits you can get a boiloer changed for free.

I know that feeling...
I decided to install LPG for a new gas cooker .. (no town gas) ..

The install is 2.5 mts. of copper pipe through the kitchen wall + change over valve /regulator+ isolation valve and a cooker tail.... cheapest quote was £500 .. and I struggled to find a Gas safe fitter who could fit me in.. all snowed under with work..

No choice .. has to be done :(

I've also been trying for a garden clearance
Earlies I can get was December
Got the hump bought a shredder out of bin and qued
£ 67 satisfying work to be honest
Felt like I was Mary poppins putting big sticks in to a little bag
Money saved will rent a skip to cart all the rubbish left over from
Moving old carpets and general stuff

I think you can get the green deal if anyone who lives in the house is on benefit not just the bread winner, lol

Bill, can't you install the boiler, plumb in the heating system and then get a Gas Safe fitter to just commission the boiler? That's what happened with mine.

Oh and he insisted on installing the flue too.

Must admit it's on my mind but I'm like a fish out of water on my old contact list I could of used quite a few

But it's a new area to me
Time isn't on my side I'm afraid new kitchen required by demand
Of Seniormissmanagement the boss head housekeeper
Boilers is in the gap storage cupboard will take

And we are changing to combi instead of fully pumped
I believe the heating pipes laid in the floor is a one pipe system
It just takes ages to heat up

So new pipework from cold mains to all and a bar shower
Eliminating electric shower

At the minute I'm thinking boiler change

Boiler to airing cupboard
Then me run new heating system to rads shower and taps

I have done this twice in different houses and never had an issue finding a qualified person to come and make the gas connection and commission the boiler.

nice to know I am not the only one. I am changing my complete bathroom. the last person had timbered the whole room. and it had started to leak behind the timber. so now have to change everything. hand going very deep in my pocket. and ripping out all that blasted timber. so all new tiles as well. on to second pocket.

This is basically what I did. Installed all of the rads and plumbing myself. Then called a gas safe engineer to install the boiler and commision the system. The cost was about £300 from memory. That included full boiler installation (I supplied the boiler), cutting hole for flue and connecting all tails and commisioning.

If you fit it yourself could you not take out an insurance deal with someone like B/gas or local heating engineer. I had a friend move a boiler for me in one of my let properties and just got the local heating engineer to check it and give certificate.

being a gas safe engineer I spend a lot of money to be gas safe and to stop john waynes of this world and be warned your house insurance is void if thing go wrong and they will look for a third party to pay for the damage we do a baxi combi with a 10 year warranty no motor home will come with a warranty like that and you would only get a second hand car for that price and get 10 to 15 years out of your heating system and winter is coming ho ho ho

Ill swap you :D

I would be more than happy doing a few boiler services a day at £60 a pop :D or a straight boiler swap at 2k

Seems like all you need to be a chippy is a hammer and a saw, well thats what the general public think:whistle:

You may not need to replace the rads and get away with just a new boiler. We live in an ex council house built in '38ish, "modernised" sometime in the '70s with a gas fired back boiler running hot water tank and rads. 10 or so yrs ago boiler started to leak so we had it ripped out and a new combi fitted in the kitchen, rads flushed and all worked well (total cost then was £1500 by CORGI reg local chap and his son). The relatively cheap boiler they fitted started playing up a couple of years ago, had it repaired but it proved to be fubar so last November the same family business replaced it with a Glow Worm unit with five years guarantee for just over £2K (its due for its first service next week) including a power flush of the rad circuit. It has worked brilliantly for the last twelve months and the rads are all fine despite being aproximately 40 years old. We live in a very hard water area so limescale build up is a major problem yet the rads will warm up in minutes from the boiler first firing up. Just because rads are old doesn't necessarily mean they have to be replaced.

D.

If you DONT have town gas then get in contact with me and I may be able to help you do the job yourself and get you on the RHI scheme that payes you money every year (renuable heat insentive).

If you find an installer that is Worcester registered, then you can get a warranty for 5 yrs as standard, an extra year if a worcester green star filter is fitted and for an additional £75 you can have another 2yrs extended warranty. So, 8yrs in total!
(Hubby is a gas fitter and Worcester reg. installer, hence knowing the above ;))

british gas were doing a free roof insulation and cavity wall -you don't have to be a Brit gas customer either -i was advised that bgas need to increase their environmental costs and are doing a free survey and free insulation -no benefits required -just lack of insulation will suffice . had my cavity walls done but a I had put in some roof insulation they would not cover that.

To my way of thinking condenser boilers aren't going to be long lived
With acidic condensates running around in them add on the electronics and mechanical bits and pieces

Nothing like the old e types ( ideal standard open fluid or balanced )
Only bits honeywell multi function valve with a thermostat
Those parts were common to most boilers
Good old days

Found a couple failed when I was a Tofo ( national grid )engineer deskilled
