We are planning on taking our new motorhome to France/Italy next summer. We have never stayed on an Aires before. Is it safe just to park up and head off for the day?

We have left ours on Aires before now and gone off for a walk etc. As soon as you arrive you will get a feeling for the place. Just be security minded. (y)

As a lot of them are car parks anyway why not. The idea of the Aire is to allow you to visit the town/village/attraction and not just sit in your van and stare at them, the locals want you to spend some cash!! We have parked in many large cities car parks and Aires and always put the alarm on and also the disklok when leaving the van.

Like others say see what you feel when you arrive but looks can be deceptive...

We have left ours on Aires many times but not before we have got a feel for the place. Go with your gut, if you or anyone with you is not fully comfortable then don't leave it and maybe move on.

@denisejoe

Agree totally.

In thirty years of motorhoming we have only felt like that on about three occasions. Each time we moved on. We will never know if we were right/wrong, but we had peace of mind!:)

On and off for many years.
We parked up at one (Eire) and we both had an uncomfortable feeling so we moved on. That is the only time we have not locked up and gone out. If I would not be happy going out for the day I would not want to sleep in that place.

The whole point of an aire is to park and explore and spend your money locally so we put the alarm on and go out for the morning / afternoon / day. We rarely travel in peak season if that makes a difference. Also we often buy food and take in back to the van for our lunch - we try not to have "habits" of the time we leave and get back.

Long enough
Some bl**dy idiot left this Motorhome on an Aire for hours and hours without locking it and came back to find it was exactly as he left it.

I really must remember to lock it up next time ......

And that was an excellent question :)

Hope you enjoy France and Italy here is a link to our truncated adventure of earlier this year :

I'm a member of that club. Last couple of trips left the driver's door unlocked several times. Tends to happen if we stop for fuel as that is the only time the cab door gets used.

I tend to ask more than once...... "Did you lock?" and then "Are you sure you locked?" ...... sometimes he hasn't.

If either one of us feels unhappy with a stop we move on. We always go for villages a bit off the beaten track. We once stayed at Honfleur Aire, not really our scene to be honest. Anyway, a couple had their brand new E-bikes lifted off the back of their MH whilst they slept.

Actually better leaving the doors unlocked as less damage and in my mind if they are trying the doors they are coming in .

That has also happened on campsites :(
