Is Gaslow a good idea in a PVC with a Truma diesel 6E?

We’re buying a PVC and negotiated a dealer install of a 2 x 6Kg Gaslow system, however I’m having second thoughts about relying on LPG as there are only three outlets in West Devon, where we live. Also, as the van has a Truma diesel 6E supplying hot water and heating, we’d only use gas for the two burner hob.

We plan on eventually taking month long trips into Europe, which is why using LPG seemed like a good idea, though most trips over the next 12 months will be in the UK.

Is it a good idea to go ahead with the Gaslow install? Your thoughts are very welcome.

Thanks
Chris

If it's just supplying a hob, even a 6KG bottle is going to last a long time, I expect your fridge is gas too, but they don't use much, heating is the biggestuser typically.

Sounds good to me gas only for cooking will last for ages plenty of time to get refills you could also get one of those camping type with canisters you can get anywhere for about £20 as a emergency (y)

The fridge runs on 12V not gas, so we won’t use much gas.

I'm still on my first 7kg Calor bottle since June 2017. It all depends how much cooking you are going to do on your gas hob. In my case, not a lot. We prefer to eat out in pubs.

Hi Chris,

If you just intend to use the burner then I'm sure you'll be fine. If however you intend to stay away from campsites then you'll only be able to use gas to heat your Truma 6E and as such this type of high usage will deplete 2 x 6kg of gas in fairly short order.

Is there any reason why you can't fit the bigger 11kg bottles.

Size and capacity is king IMO

All the best,

Andrew

If you have the room then I would go with it, then because there aren’t many lpg stations near you it won’t be a problem, you can fill up very occasionally on your travels.
It looks like that is a good idea. We’d just need to keep an eye on the levels and pretty much forget about the gas supply, which will be good.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your thoughts. When wild camping, the Truma heating will run off diesel, not gas. I think your suggestion about the two 11kg bottles is a good idea as long as they will fit. I’ll have a word about that with the dealer tomorrow.

Ahem. The 6D won't run on gas ...

My mistake as explained above Chris, lol, but if you were to have 2 x 11kg and diesel heating then you'll never have the need to come home again

That said, the bottles are heavier so keep an eye on the payload too.

Ha ha, sounds good. We certainly like the idea of the diesel heating,

Good point about the weight of the bigger bottles. We might be uncomfortably close to the payload limit if we’re not careful.

.....and don't forget about the weight allowance for your wine and beer. You'll need at least 200kg of payload for that too ;)

.....assuming that you're an alcoholic like most of us on here!

Do any mainstream converters still offer a diesel fuelled hob then you wouldn’t need any lpg at all. I notice that Murvi no longer offer a diesel hob, a gas free Murvi was always advertised by them.

Are the diesel hobs smelly or unreliable I wonder?

We nearly went Gaslow until they advised that the only way to ensure ability to fill up required us to fit the external fill up point. Brand new van so won't cut holes in it. 1 x 13kg + 1 x 6kg won't fit so have unded up with 2 x 6kg, which I'm happy with. Have bought electric kettle and induction hob for outside use. Truma uses diesel to heat van and water. Gas is really now emergency only fuel. And relax...

We had our Gaslow refill point mounted in the plastic bumper of our new van.

Very easy to do and no drilling of the metal:

This is how the dealer will fit the outlet into our new van too.

I hope it’s not MoHo ownership that drives people to alcohol 😀

That very much depends on the brand you bought and how many times you need to take it back to the dealer for repairs and leaks :)

If I ever remove my system, e.g. when changing m/h I'll just fix a circular plastic grille/vent over the hole. No-one would ever know there'd been a gas filler unit.

If the dealer is doing the gas bottles as a freebee no reason not to have then but if paying 1 X 6kg would be enough for you use.

We always fit the smaller square filler in the sill.

For the past 8 years we have toured in EU twice a year for 8 weeks a time in May/June then Sept/Oct in a full gas/ electric UK Motorhome. We always stayed on campsites so used hook up but did supplement the gas heating at either end when travelling in cooler times & we use the oven a lot. I considered a gaslow system but after monitoring our gas useage over a period of trips it was just ludicrous to spend the money on one! We used less than 2kg of gas for every tour so why waste all that money.

Hmmm. Definitely food for thought. Thank you.

We decided to go with the gaslow install, mainly because of the convenience of filling and forgetting it for quite a while.

Thank you to everybody who helped in this thread.
