We are thinking about the possibility of going to Ireland next year. Plenty to see - prehistory, scenery, etc. We are not cyclists or walkers.
We havent toured for about 8 years, and when we did it was with a caravan. We have been to France, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg; never booked sites. We cant see how we are going to know how long we will want to stop in any place in Ireland, but most of the sites I've looked at so far seem to suggest that advance booking is necessary. I have read a couple of threads elsewhere on this site and people have stopped at marinas and the like. We are not interested in true wild camping, but would be OK with a mixture of sites and "official" overnight stops.
If we dont book are we likely to get into problems? Has anyone been recently?

July and August are busy of course with schools off so tourists hot spots will need campsites booking eg Kerry and Dingle.
I did three weeks on the Wild Atlantic Way in September and didn't book anything, loads of space. There are loads of wild camping places but I expect in peak season these will be busy too.
So probably depends on when you plan to go

Hi we are away at the moment in Scotland on a five week holiday, 1st two weeks were in Ireland we never used a site once, we found just like France places to empty and fill water. We stayed in some stunning places but only stayed one night at each of them, as long as you leave no mess no one will bother you. We sailed from Scotland to Northern Ireland, very friendly people, we will definitely go back

Thanks for these thoughts. We were sort of thinking of June, def. not late July or august. Hadn’t really thought of September, bit concerned about the weather at that time of year.
Forgot to say, we prefer small CL type sites, not big commercial ones.

Just a note of caution - the Wild Atlantic Way itself is not really suitable for anything over 7m but it's not too difficult to work your way around the narrow bits.

We went for 5 weeks in September this year with 7mtr motorhome and smart car on trailer started Rosslare along south coast and up west coast no problems sites busy weekends quite in week. July /August you would need to book.
Came back Dublin/ Holyhead.
