Hello
Has anyone had the ignition key get stuck in the barrel?
We’ve got a Laika motorhome on a 2005 Ducato. It’s an automatic.
The key turns and starts the van ok, it drives ok, but when you turn off the ignition the key wont come out of the barrel. I can’t get the key to turn to the “park” position either!
I’ve tried pushing the button on the barrel, wiggling and pulling, squirted WD40 in but it wont come out.
Any ideas?
Thank you

as its auto does it have to be in park/neutral

Hi, yes normally in park. I’ve tried putting it in every position though

try pressing foot brake??

I'm not 100% sure but I think there is a microswitch in the gearbox that should releases the key.
From what I remember, a friend who had a similar problem, located a small lever underneath one of the covers on the steering column which enabled him to release the key?
I will get back with the proper story after I have spoken with him.

Update.
My friend, as you with an automatic gearbox, could not release the ignition key from the barrel. On removing the steering column cover, he found a small red lever near the ignition switch, which was suppost to lift a couple of mm's when the engine was switch off, thereby allowing the key to be released. As this action was not happening he wedged the lever permanently 'up' allowing the key to be released, and he's still driving it like that today.
Hope this may be of help.

I hope this works, if it does it just shows the vast knowledge the people of this forum have

Thank you Sifta Sam, I’ll try that.

Sifta Sam, I wish I could buy you and your friend a pint.

I’ve been trying to get the key out of the barrel for two days. I’ve been to two motorhome places (we’re in Germany touring Europe for a few weeks) the first one sent me to the second one and second one said find a Fiat specialist. I’ve spent a hour on the internet googling.

I know where I’ll try first next time. Thank you very much for the info.
Four screws to remove the cover then wedged a bit of cardboard under the little red lever and the key comes out as it should. Happy days.
The little red lever just looks like a large cable tie with all the wires around it, I don’t think I would have ever thought to lift it if I wasn’t told about it. Thanks again.

That's really good .
Now the winning numbers for tonight's lottery please.:)

Thanks for the feedback.
Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for posting the outcome. It can be very frustrating when you follow a thread, waiting for the outcome and OP doesn't bother to post back. Really glad you got it sorted.
