These days few things are really free and I was somewhat sceptical to be offered a free upgrade on my wife's Iphone.
Checking who was making the offer I discovered it was Carphone Shed. So it looked legitimate except our contract was with Tesco.
It got more intriguing when my wife answered the phone and the lady called me Kenneth, which is not my name. My wife pointed out she bought the phone on Ebay, not the Shed people. It seems that the person (Kenneth) sold the phone and after a couple of years was entitled to a free upgrade. I am still wondering if I should have accepted the offer.

So did you take on Kenneth's phone number with the phone as well ? as I don't get how did they think it was Kenneth on a fresh sim card in the phone from Tesco.

Sound like a bit of fishing to me, throw out the bait and see what you haul in.

It’s weird because I had a new phone from work with a new SIM card but for the first 2-3 years I got calls from Geordie pubs and clubs calling me to perform a gig. I think they recycle phone numbers?

Believe they do. (y)

Numbers do get recycled.

Also the upgrade is not free, you pay for the new handset in the monthly contract price.

Some companies offer a lower monthly rate for SiM only contracts and the same service.

Also some companies reduce your monthly payment after the phone cost has be paid for.

If your not wanting the latest phone, SIM only is the way, either keep your current phone at the end of the contact and switch to SIM free with current provider, or buy a £100 ish phone, SIM free and shop around.

We are around £9 a month for unlimited text and calls, plus 5gb data which is more than enough for us

I think that they have got a self destruct system built into the phone so that you have to get a new phone. The volume has gone wrong on mine and I am dreading getting another one.

The battery is usually the first to go. Most phones now are sealed and access to the battery is restricted, therefore the option of a new battery is gone.

My wife will only buy a phone now that has a removable battery after her one died in Australia & couldn't be repaired.

That's one of the reasons we bought a £100 new phone, still works out a lot cheaper than contract

Should have accepted the offer of gigs. No matter how bad you are at music you'd still be better than some that played the pubs !
