I really don’t know how you stand the heat

Been there, done that, but it was a bit easier when I was in my twentys.😁
I went in my early 30s and stayed (apart from hols of course) till 12 years ago when i sold up and retired. Rigs, desert, petro plants, construction sites. And still go back once or twice a year to see son and grandkids. Son is 43 and born there in Rashid hospital, as was his brother 9 years later in Al Wasl hospital.
The old addage, i could write a book with the experiances...............but i'm not clever enough.

maybe note down those experiences on tape for your family to retrieve in the future, and anyways, you always manage to make your travels here very readable for which I and no doubt others, thank you..

I was only out there for a couple of years in the 80s, working for a computer company that had an instalation in the military survey department in Riyadh, so I was lucky I only had to endure the heat during leisure time, but had a great time, and did thousands of kms in cross country 4x4 trips on the weekends.

One little story (maybe it should be on another thread) Mrs Bob is a accountant. In the 80s she was working for a retail company on Zabeel Road. Over the weekend the place got robbed and all the money had gone from the broken safe.
On Saturday morning (start of the week then) the cops were called. By evening time they had solved the case, Mrs Bob was arrested, the evidence was her prints were on the tills and safe.
Took some explaining that her last job in the evenings was to empty the tills and put the cash from the tills into the safe so whose prints are going to be on them. Further, took them awhile to realise the watchman and tea boy had absconded and flew back to India on Friday.
They released Mrs Bob after 5 hours. They were very polite and apologetic during the whole episode.
Mrs Bob gave one months notice of resignation.

I'm surprised they still had passports, ours were held by our employers (Murphys).
In the 80s not all companies kept the passports.
When i first went out there i worked for Al Futtaim, i was given the option to keep my passport or they would look after it. I chose to keep it.
The company HRH worked for had the same policy.

In the 80s the police there probably did not believe a woman could be an accountant and have that responsibility.

I was working in the full glare of the sun yesterday building a new dormer on our house.

Once you start you have to get it to a position of not leaking.
Started at 7.30 and finished at 20.30.
South facing garden as well 😱

Think I lost a stone in weight sweating, yes I know I needed to 😉😊

The way she took my money today I can understand that….. I counted my fingers afterwards to make sure I still had them all….😆😂😉

the Eurom two piece A/C are ok for what they are , i used one in my 7.4 metre caravan and it kept the internal temperature at a comfortable level when it was 30c
In really hot weather I switched it on before 10am and left it running all day
I think I may have ago with one of these.
Have looked at roof mounted but most cut out a lot of light and the times we need it they are a biggishoutlay.
I can see a use in my man cave / shed on occasions as well

I’d be interested how you get on with it - can you keep us updated, please?

I've placed an order.
Not planning to cart it about all the time but as long as it works it will find a space for our German trip.
Hoping it can cool the van prior to bed time as that's when I have issues with the heat.
I'm not expecting it to cope with the van sitting in full sun.
Some reorganisation of storage is on the cards?

The weather here is perfect and always a nice breeze 😀

Into our 5th week here now and yes the weather is just perfect. Not bumped into Yorick yet though.
Not sure if 31 mph is classed as a breeze but it's a welcome warm wind between your legs!

I found by closing the dividing door it cooled down the seating area in the front of the van more effectively when it was very warm

Well that turned up quicker than expected.
Anyway have given a first run.
Van was only 25c took it down to 20c in about 20 minutes.
Will give it a proper test on a warmer day.
I now have to sort out a storage option that will fit around the bikes etc

I agree, if it's over 20C, run away somewhere colder! We love going away in our van if it's below freezing, cosy. At home I can cope up to about 26C, but above that I'm not happy, and we live in a cold house on top of a hill where it's mostly windy. Ideal weather for me is dry, and anywhere from -10 to +20C. Best holiday we've had was Iceland in January, never got above -5!

Couple of picks
The iner and outer units are permanently attached and are fairly heavy 22kg ?

Please keep us updated on how your getting on with your portable ac unit - last weekend in Cotswolds at 36 was very uncomfortable as still 26 at 10pm with no breeze. I’ve heard they are very noisy to run at night? Also that extreme heat has killed our fridge 😕

Prior to our Spain trip this year we bought two small fans from B&M, about £7 each. They’re rechargeable via a USB, have clips on the back so can easily be mounted in a variety of places. Plugged into a USB they can run for hours, very quiet and don’t use much power. Were an absolute godsend when temps got up to 38* in Spain.

While they are not overly noisy think a big desk fan on a highish setting. I could sleep with it running but I don't think Mrs G would though she can't sleep if it's very hot anyway.
Also I wouldn't want to upset anyone on adjoining pitches.
It's certainly quieter than some of the diesel heaters some folk run.

I find walking around with your scrotum in a bucket of ice helps 👍
Hope you find that helpful 🫣
Bit hard for us women to try that particular technique....perhaps need to pack our knickers with ice...

Gave things a test today.
Van was sitting in full sun with the blinds that faced the sun closed.
If I was parked up I would normally have the insulated screen cover on but didn't today.

Switched AC on at 12 and off again about 1:45
Power use was about 600wh

It was fine to sit inside.
The intended use is for us to cool the van in the evening and I'm happy it will do that when needed.
