Having a few hours on my hands I decided to try and make fire. I used an old coat hanger and some rope initially, however swapped the rope for guy rope bit like parachute cord. Did not hold much hope initially. Can't add video so the pic will have to suffice. Its a cracking feeling! Hope you are all safe and well? Regards.

When we have the next fun meet you can light the proverbial bonfire assuming we are there long enough :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I Bet after all that effort you didn't need the fire for warmth::bigsmile:

A few years ago when we observed these things I bought hubby a flint and striker for Valentines Day! He was so chuffed! However, I was less chuffed when I found him lighting cotton wool in the spare bedroom to see if it worked! He was about 36 at the time! ?

I was at a music festival a few years ago and one of the distractions offered was a "Learn how to light a fire with a flint" I booked myself in for it and took some iron pyrites and flint which I'd found on the beach at Charmouth. When I turned up at the allotted hour, it appeared it was for kids under 12 years old and they were just using those modern "striker" things, needless to say I

Took 2 youngest grandchildren to a National Trust woodcraft day last year-they made fire with batteries and wire wool, flint strikers etc. Was a lovely day, 7 year old ( a force of nature) spent next day in garden lighting everything he could find - something about reaping a whirlwind comes to mind- thank god no one in family has a thatched roof

If you know what you are doing I've seen fire produced in under 2 mins using this method.

A lot of it is about preparation of the base plate.
I seem to remember is was very dry poplar or willow.
They cut a V in the edge, and then carved a depression for the stick which had a rounded end.
and they filled the V with charcoal.

There will be loads of YouTube videos around on how to do it

Well done that man. I know this will sound a bit anal but I have on my bucket list "Go into a wood and make fire". I've just thought I had better add "and put it out" as well..........

Not anal at all.I did this when I was around 12.Remember getting home and dad asking me if I had been lighting fires in the woods.Having replied no .I got a clip around the ear. Then how come your trousers are covered in ash and you smell like a bonfire ?

Thats a job for tomorrow... ? turbulent times we're in. Confused on how to begin my bunker though ?
You could ask my wife, I saw her doing some secret planning for some digging in the back garden which looked quite deep,
She thinks i dont know. more fool her
