I had heard that there is an advantage in dealing with the renewal promptly but I really didn't believe it.
Yesterday 25 July I applied to Saga, who I like as I thought it was straightforward, using a policy start date of the 23rd August . That is 29 days away and got a quote for £225. A few minutes later I realised that the start date should be 13th August 19 days away, suddenly the quote jumped to £258!
I rang them and as usual the very nice lady said that she was sorry she couldnt help, they have discount systems for renewal but not for new business!
Moved to Caravanguard at £259 inc legal and UK breakdown ( Annie says no Europe even next year!?)
Hopefully thats it done for another year

One of my bug bears that there is no loyalty discount for insurance (among others) but they look after the new often one off customers.

Ps I understand why they do it but wonder if a company came to the market with an opposite view (especially as it’s a pain going through the renewal process) how they would do

Martin Lewis from moneysaving expert is always banging on about insurance is cheaper if you get your quote 21 days or more before renewal date

Just renewed car insurance - due 8 August so still couple of weeks to go; bearing in mind Martin Lewis' comments thought I'd give it a go. Already had renewal papers (I don't auto-renew) from existing insurer who wanted £280, an increase of £90.

Now in three previous years I've done the comparison then contacted the insurers who, one way or another have kept it to within spitting distance, usually by some form of voucher or whatnot.

This time went onto the comparison sites and immediately the best quote, from a well-recognised and reliable insurer, was just £150! - just over HALF of my existing insurer. It was a no-brainer, signed straight up, of course as new business, as there was no way it could be matched. Actually got slightly better cover too!

My point? When they've "got" you they think they can get away with it, especially if you're a "loyal" customer. "New" customers always get the best deals.

And I've had almost exactly the same experience with all my other insurances.

We had recovery via the RAC and this year they increased the premium by £65 even though our motorhome is less than a year old. We were on auto-renewal and they simply took the premium, we did not receive the prior notification that they said they had sent out.

I don’t know how we were on auto-renewal as we never utilise it, preferring to shop around each year. The auto-renewal has now been cancelled.

I suppose vehicle recovery also counts as insurance, and appears to follow the same business model.

When you take out insurance a lot of companies automatically put you onto auto renew and it's up to you to opt out by telling them you don't want it. They often don't tell you that's what they do. We always so we don't want auto renew when we sign up even though they don't mention it.

Motorhome insurance went up 30quid, (Caravan Club), But because I changed the Toad that went down by a similar amount. (and only 20quid tax). The house insurance has only gone up by what I guess is Inflation £20. Which, considering they paid out close to 40 grand for our flood two years ago. could easily have been higher.
