Friends of ours wants to buy a small van and has seen one he likes. The problem his wife sees is has only two gas rings and no oven. HOW do you manage with only two gas rings? They intend to use the van for longish holiday .

Would it have somewhere they could slot in a combination microwave, I know it could mean less storage, it's weighing up the balance of what you need.
I hope they sort it & enjoy.

They could easily get one of those campinggaz single burners for about £12 which run off the aerosol sized gas bottles, to give them extra capacity.

It certainly wouldn't put me off a van.

Depending on where and how long and on ehu or not.
We’re in Spain for three months so have put the kitchen tent up with three rings available in there. A halogen oven and a slow cooker.
When overnighting we have three rings in the van and a double skillet in place of an oven and a three stack pan system for boiling and steaming.

I have three rings but don’t think I have ever used them all. I have a three section steamer pan so usually potato in the bottom then veg in other two. If more I just put more than one veg in each section.

then again I don’t have an oven either but hasn’t stopped me eating :)

Hilary says that is not a holiday if she has to cook, I agree and so we have cereal for breakfast, lunch out and either a cold tea or take away!
That’s fine for a holiday but we fulltime and couldn’t afford to eat out all the time.

I don't cook, so 1 ring is more than enough. But the oven is essential. How else do you warm up those stab it twice convenience meals when you are away and not on EHU so a microwave isn't an option? I'll happily cremate something on the BBQ, but that's only an option when it's warm outside.

For years we have camped as a family of four using noting but two of those small camping stoves with the aerosol style bottles. In my opinion, the key is in the equipment that you choose to use on those 2 rings and prior preparation. We use a 4 person camping stacking pan set and also take a compact stacking steamer and one of those flimsy toast making things.
Just these simple bits of kit allow to make some suprisingly good meals! Some of it will be one pots, such as chilli, two pots such as a curry and rice or pasta dishes. With the steamer you can have pan fried fish and steamed veg or a nice salad. I wouldn't be without my toast and marmite (shh all you haters out there!!) and the kids love some beans on toast for lunch!
With the huge "van-life" craze at the moment, there are also quite a few books and youtube channels which might be able to give them some ideas as well. Here's one which I believe has been very well received Amazon product ASIN 1444703897. Hope that helps a bit and good luck to your friends!

Thanks for your replies, I reckon a double skillet thing and a cook book.

Steamer is useful. Dont have an oven.
Anything microwaveable can be put in a fry pan with lid on lowest heat. Sorted.

we have four rings.. but can honestly say never used more than two... don't like cooking in the motor home.
get yourself a webber Q1200 and an induction hob and cook outside

Traveled thousands of miles on a bike a tent & 2 of these never went hungry ?

We travelled, for six to eight weeks at a time n a PVC with only two burner rings but had a small combination oven/grill too. We didn’t use it much in order to save gas but reckon we could have managed OK with just the two rings.

We're a family of 4 and do summer and winter trips and manage quite easily. Cadac all summer long and quite often under the canopy in the rain......bizarrely I quite enjoy that?????
We have 3 burners but as has already been said not much room to fit more that two pans but never a problem and we eat well.
On a French aire we'll use a small gas hob instead of the cadac and always tastes great.........that is apart from when I bought a pizza stone for the cadac and we made our own pizzas; black as coal on the bottom and luke warm on the top...more practice with that I think!
Enjoy it whatever you do!

Next time we eat i'll keep a close eye on Pammy and let you know how she does it
PS doesn't this belong in the Ladies section:cool:

As its motorhome we don't expect Gordon Ramsey calling in. Three rings. One for the boiled eggs while the beans are cooking on number two and a spare. Ample. It's called holiday mode so cooking is a big NO if possible.

Mind you I was trained up by a seasoned race meeting spectator with only one gas canister & ring.

This was his breakfast

Pre cook sausages (at home)
Tin of beans
2 eggs

Lob the sausages in the saucepan add the beans, when nice & hot crack in the egg's, Breakfast job done,
