Hi all, a newbie here.

I have recently purchased a motor home from a dealer, in which I am having a few modifications performed at a garage local to the dealer.

However it is now 2 months since I have purchased this and have no documentation etc to show proof of ownership. I have spoke to the DVLA who have yet to receive the V5C, and am struggling to get a response from the dealer relating to this.

a) Is this time frame normal / concerning
b) any ideas what I can do about this

Thanks in advance for any advice

Can only quote on my purchase back in May this year. Had the V5 within 7 days, may have even been 5..

When you say you're "struggling to get a response from the dealer" what exactly do you mean? Is he just ignoring you, is he contactable but deflects the question, can you be more specific? I'd be getting pretty worried if he's not contactable. You've paid by BACS. Are you sure that the account to which you sent the money is the account of the dealer and not some bogus acount using the dealer's letter heading? Happens quite a lot these days of emailed and scanned documents.

I’m having deja vu on another thread on something similar, the dealer once he has your money doesn’t give a toss, however I would do an hpi check and I’ll give 2-1 on that the dealer has finance on your Motorhome and that is probably why there slow in sending the v5 off....

I hope not but I would check and get round to the dealers and make some noise ....?

Maybe speak to a solicitor but don't forget having the motorhome is 9/10's of ownership.

Speak with DVLA

A V5 if I remember correctly does not ownership.

Pay for a Vehicle check - HPI check. It need not be expensive and will prove HP etc.

But don't forget this is a paid forum. You only get I think 5 posts. I would recommend joining if you are new to the motor homing as you will have lots of questions in the future.

Originally claimed the DVLA processing was slow, however I have phoned the DVLA who confirm that up to now that I am not the registered keeper

Since then, I have asked about this both by email and messenger requesting to know when the documentation was send and if it was online or by post. No response has yet been received to these

Is there a way that I can track the registered keeper to see if they have been paid by the dealer?

Thanks for the help

Did you understand that the van you were buying was being sold by the dealer as agent for the seller? Normally your contact would be with the dealer but if he was selling as agent, he wouldn't have the title to the van and accordingly couldn't give you a good title (ownership).
Also, the registered keep is NOT a proof of ownership. Is the dealer a normal motorhome dealer, i.e. with premises, stock, offices etc? Do they belong to any trade associations?
If you knew you were buying from an agent, I'd want not only to ensure that the actual seller owned the van but that my money went directly to the owner and no one else.
Still more info required sorry to say.

If I were you I would be knocking on the dealers door to find out what’s going on, was the dealer an accredited Motorhome dealer?
Have you actually seen the van and driven it or has this bloke arranged the work to be done for you?? If so I smell a rat and you need to take advice from solicitor.

Dealers who sell vehicles subject to a finance agreement are usually not doing so with the finance house's permission and it can be a crime as well as the tort of conversion.
I'd do as Speve suggested and go round to the dealer and not leave until you received proper answers as well as bona fide documentation. If none is forthccomimg I'd go to the police and report what has gone on.

Do you actually know where this van is , you say it is at a garage near the dealer, have you seen it since you bought it?
Is it just a back street dealer in all sorts of motors or a genuine motorhome dealer with other motorhomes , sounds very dodgy to me I'm afraid.

If it’s a used vehicle you should have been given the green part of the V5. Can you visit the dealer and the garage and see the vehicle and ask where your V5 is?
You should also have a receipt for payment.
the dealer should be able to notify DVLA online of the new keeper and you should get a new V5 in your name within a week.
I would be chasing the seller up as a matter of urgency, it all sounds a bit suspicious to me.

I the OP has used up all his free posts so probably won’t here from him again but it sounds very fishy. Could it be a wind up?

Even if the garage doing the modifications is genuine and working in good faith, if the van has been "sold" subject to finance or if the dealer has trousered the money as agent for the owner/seller, the owner could come back and take the van and our new chum will be out of pocket not only for the van but also the cost of the mods.
I hope we're all wrong but this does stink a little. Fingers crossed. Maybe OP hasn't got the subscription........:censored:

I would check it's still there also, the dealer may have taken it back from the garage by showing the v5 as his.

Hope he can get it sorted you hear of so many people getting taken by scammers and it a big chunk of money usually of someone’s hard earned, I would be heartbroken if it happened to us.?
