We have just bought a new Hymer in Germany which comes equipped with a satellite dish and tv. The tv appears to have a built in receiver. We have tried to retune to uk channels without success. Do we need to buy a separate receiver for the uk and if so can anyone recommend one that will also work with 12volt. Any help for the technologically challenged would be gratefully received!

If it’s an Avtex you need to go into TVs sat settings and retune and make sure your dish is tuned to Astra 2 I expect the German programmes are on Astra 1 you need to do that on your dish control panel.(y)(y)(y)

Welcome! I suspect you need to find a manual for your satellite dish, assuming it is automatic, and tell it to point to Astra 2. You can then do the tuning on the TV. No amount of retuning of the TV will work if the dish is pointing to a satellite which doesn't speak English. :)

Thanks for all the advice and for the messages of welcome - we’ve redirected Sat dish to Astra 2 and tried retuning but still no luck. The TV is Alphatronics and the dish is Oyster Vision III - hundreds of channels seem to load but then we get the message ‘no signal. Please check the satellite equipment, cables and connectors’! I’m sure we are missing something simple!! (Like a brain!)

Sounds a daft question, but you are in the UK now aren't you? Although you'll get Astra 2 out of the country you won't be able to tune in to many of the English channels.

Edit - can the dish "see" the satellite i.e. there are no obstructions like trees etc in the way.

Not such a daft question - we are only just outside of the UK in St Malo - we live in Jersey!! We have managed to get a few channel 4 programmes and will try again when we get home. All the help provided has been very helpful as it’s got us this far. Thank you everyone!

Thank you for the manual - that will be very useful - I’ve also managed to download the oyster handbook. We are now making progress!

Thanks everyone for your help yesterday - I have now managed to set up the TV with multiple UK channels. Too many to handle - can anyone help with adding channels to the favourites list. Google doesn't seem to be able to help!

4 years later - same exact problem . UK based now ( gave up in South EU)
We have Alphatronics retractable TV connected to Oyster V Sat system . Found Astra 2 . TV searches Astra 2 and finds 97 channels, but I cannot seem to store the fruits of the scan . only visible option after search is complete is EXIT.
Then selecting source “satellite” on TV defaults to Hotbird & no channels found. If I knew how to save the Astra channels post scan & discovery - I feel we might make progress . Oyster support are good but they can’t help any on aalphatronics.
UK support for TV ?

If it's a German TV then it will not have Freeview as that is a UK thing.

Freeview is UK TV via a TV aerial, so your satellite dish system will not be able to pick up Freeview, simply as they are two completely different transmission methods!

But with the dish aligned to the Astra 2 satellites - the UK TV satellites - then a channel scan should pick up all the free UK TV channels that are on those satellites. If it picks up German channels on its scan then you are on Astra 1, or Dutch on Astra 3, then you are on the wrong satellites!

If you want ITVHub, or rather ITVX (sounds like a porn channel!) when it relaunches later this month, then you will need a compatible device...as it is highly doubtful the Avtex will have that available....as even the Humax Freesat boxes will not have access to it
