Over the years have been fleeced endlessly because am a lone woman without a clue on engines and finally thought I had found a guy I could trust. BUT he has left the garage I take my MH to for MOT.

Last year it passed fine. Then they put a new cambelt on.. Paid in full. Then today I took it for MOT again..... Under 100 miles driven in 12 months due to illness.

Money IS a problem if you can bear that in mind.

I had saved up the 400 quoted to replace automatic window winder mechanism but that will now have to wait!! Below is what they have said needs doing to pass MOT. :(

They have given a price but I feel bit iffy about it to say the least... GUTTED more aplropriate word. ..

What region do you feel the quote should be in for the following, please? Sorry to be a pain. . Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi sorry to hear this.... what location are oyu, that might help in finding a garage to give a competitive quote.

That list isn’t a bad as it looks.

I’d guess if the hazard switch is changed it removes a lot of the other fails.

Fix the caliper leaks, new discs and pads and it’s a clean sheet.

New wiper blades are cheap.

Offside lamp needs changing.

That's what I thought... A few light bulb changes here, a squirt of oil there, new windscreen wipers, .....

Between 6 to 700 pounds!!!!

Seems a lot for the work required, parts are reasonably cheap. But its more than a squirt of oil. Have you got a breakdown of the work.
The contamination of the brake disc and pads is due to the caliper leaking. The brake disk can be cleaned ,with alcohol or replaced. The caliper leak can be just an O ring or a new caliper due to piston damage.,New brake pads will be required both sides to rear
The above will sort out the handbrake also
New wiper blades ,clean out the hazard switch, worst case new switch and replace bulb in indicator and position light.
You really need to get hold of a mechanical mate to do the work for you. Garage wise it would be at least £500 ,all parts will be top price and labour around £80-90 an hour.

At a guess disc and pads are the most expensive items on the list.

Can you not go where the mechanic has gone to.

If you was closer I’d have done it for you.

Where abouts are you?

It’s always a problem when you don’t know how to do something or how difficult the items are to do.

Good luck 👍

Thing is it's a switch and a few bulbs, the pads and discs are only contaminated with brake fluid and can be cleaned with brake cleaner, at worst the pads might need replacing and obviously the caliper seals, so all these parts should come to less than £100.

If the callipers are both leaking, they won't repair them, only replace them at about £120 each side for exchange units, they'll probably want to change the discs (maybe not necessary ?) and the pads may have oil contamination on them so will need replacing. Discs will be about £25 each and pads about £20 to do both sides. The position lamp and indicator faults will just need the contacts in the rear bulb holders cleaned (common problem with the Jokon back lights) and I'm pretty sure the hazard switch might just need a spray of contact cleaner, let's face it, it won't be worn out as it's hardly ever used ?
I guess you're looking at about £350 for parts and then labour on top, so £600 ish won't be far off the mark Joy. :(

Still South Karl.

Don't know where mechanic gone.

Thanks all for advice. I think I getting my head sorted now and I'll sort it. Hugs.

Can you try to find him through social media? People like to post about new jobs, house moves etc., so you might be able to find where he's moved to or now working. Good luck :) x

Its not worth cleaning pads for the price of them, discs yes ,you can give them a good soak in petrol and then clean off with alcohol. caliper seals depend on what's caused the leak ,looks like the van has been standing,(100 miles in a year) so probably seized up with rust( water in brake fluid) and applying brakes has broken the seal, depends if pistons/ liner is corroded.,that's another hour to check it, if doing it yourself that's fine but a garage will replace as they don't want comeback and the price of checking ,cleaning replacing parts etc is more than a new one

My thoughts entirely.

Hi sunshine, not Kent but thanks for being as lovely as ever.

Think there may be a song there. :)

I'm ok now... :)
Joy, If you can just give the first part of the postcode I may be able to provide labour if not too far away from me,
Other Funsters have helped me recently with things i cannot do, so will help if I can

c£150 for parts and maximum 3 hours labour. Ho yes then the re-test fee

Thank you all. Really appreciated every single post. Makes me feel not so alone.

Got the way forward in my head now.. ..

I'm not close to any of you but thanks again and I'll keep you updated... May have to concentrate on a hospital appointment this week first.

You are simply the best. Xxxxx

As Silver Fox says, that is not so bad. Many things on the list are related to a simple change. However I am surprised you have not done a simple ‘does it work’ check before you took it for the test. Wipers and lights for example. Good luck with the mechanic search.

You must be in the south , I use a garage in Blackburn @ £50 an hour

our joy worries a bit so comments like that are not helpfully, knowing she had wiper & light problems wasn’t going to make a difference to someone who has no mechanical ability 🥺
